Storage Review has some interesting details about the IBM Deskstar 120GXP Hard Drives and keeping them active longer than 8 hours.
Q: Would you recommend this drive in a server role?
A: No, the drive is intended to be on for no more than about 8 hours a day. If it were only used during that period and then shut down for the day, then it would be fine, but it definitely should NOT be used in a 24/7 role for those customers concerned with reliability.
I can't believe IBM would state that considering a lot of power users run their rigs 24/7. Then again, I don't see the difference between 2 hours and 8. It's probably more of an issue with case temperature, but that's just speculation at this point.
You can read the full article from here.

Then why would I buy it?

IBM needs to consider firing that guy. You have to admire his honesty, but he's not doing IBM any good.
On the other hand, make a reliable drive and you don't have to worry in the first place.

why fire him? if you read the whole thing, youd see that the purpose of that warning (which is public, not just from that guy) is to prevent lawsuits. but 8 hours a day is too low for any computer, much less a server.
you couldnt pay me to install one.
