i`m having ntl 128k cable installed this week and would like to set up both pc`s so they are able to use the internet..
i know i need two network cards and the cat cable to link them but once they are installed what do i do next?
anyone give good advice on where and what brand components to buy and give me a complete walkthrough on setting up the network ...
by the way the cable modem will be plugged into the usb port on my pc as i dont have a ethernet port...

You will need
1: 2 network cards
2: 2 lengths of cat5 cables that will hook up your network cards and to item #3.
3: A router.
You should get yourself a router because they are now cheaper then ever, and solve many problems.
The router acts as your gateway with the address that your ISP has given you. It then assignes sub addresses to all computers hooked up to it, thereby fooling the ISP into believing you only have one computer hooked up. It also gives you a hardware firewall.
The cable modem will then hook up to the router, with cat 5 cables going from the router to your computers network cards.
With this you won't need to use USB. Be sure to get 10/100 network cards because they allow faster transfer to and fro your computers.
As for routers and network cards. I use a Linksys router with Dlink network cards. Even have a linksys PCMCIA network card for my laptop.
Hubs won't do what you want because a hub will not allocate sub addresses for your computers. Hubs are excellent if you need more computers on the LAN (local area network) with a switch or router going to the WAN (World area network...Internet).
There are many types of routers. Be sure to read up on them using reviews on the net so that you can select the one you want or need.
Read this home network FAQ .

Well what I would do is this.
Get the cable modem installed by your ISP technician on your main computer so that you know everything is working before buying the other stuff needed for your home network. When you buy your items, each will come with instructions. Your router will come with documentation and will walk you through step by step in installing and setting it up.
Likewise, for my router, you can download the instruction manual so that you can get a sense of what is involved. From the bottom link, just click on "User Guide". This is a PDF file and it is very large..so it will take its merry time to upload onto your screen. You will need Acrobat reader if you don't already have it.
4 port router Linksys
You will need some information from your ISP. For instance, you will need your broadband configured PC's computer name and workgroup name, your Pc's fixed Internet IP address, your Subnet Mask, your default gateway, and your primary DNS Server IP address (if needed).
You can ask this from your ISP tech when he/she comes to install your cable. Likewise, you can find lots of this info in your START...CONTROL PANEL.....NETWORK CONNECTIONS....SUPPORT tab. This is for Win XP, but I am sure you can get this info with other operating systems. I never had to muck about networking ect, when I was last on Win98SE or ME, so my memory is a little fuzzy. It should be similar if you do not have such folder in your properties section.
