herbal or horrible?

ok, heres da rant. if you want to take herbal substances to medicate yourself, you have every right to do so. but do the research first so you can watch for the more serious side effects, some of which can be lethal. keep in mind that herbs do NOT go through the same safety and efficacy tests that drugs do.
i do use a number of food supplements and herbs, but am well aware of the potential side effects. please educate yourself before you take anything, particularly if you take other medication (including birth control). if you have a chronic health condition or take prescription drugs, talk to your doctor about your use of supplements. some can have fatal consequences when mixed with standard drugs.
on a side note, the herbs can actually be adulterated with other substances, as documented here:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/he...000/1873081.stm
so do be careful about taking unregulated substances.

I don't see how people think 'natural' things are better for you than drugstore bottled drugs.
At least you know exactly what you are getting when you buy a labelled bottle in the store.

Two words:
Generalization ... Regulation...
The first one is the impression you're both getting from the news ... the second is the one that needs to be done to stop it...
Besides, the bottled drugs aren't that much better, either ... those who use just any kind of herb without knowing possible side effects deserves what happens to them ... I mean, has anyone ever died from using ginseng?

alone, no one that i know of. but it does interact with some drugs.
my point wasnt that herbs are bad. just that people need to be aware that they have side effects and interactions just as prescription drugs do. including fatal ones. as i said, i do take herbs for various reasons. but i am aware of the potential effects. and would certainly tell my doctor if he prescribed me anything.

Slightly off topic, I enjoy watching US commercials on pharmaceuticals. By law, they have to tell you the side effects. So it is entertaining to see happy people dancing and frolicking meanwhile the announcer is stating in the background "possible side effects include headaches, nausea, dry mouth, sore stomach, sore joints, and in rare cases internal bleeding. If you are taking any antihistamines, are pregnant, or taking any anti inflammatory drugs..you should consult your physician."
Meanwhile, the happy couple are enjoying their new lease on life...
Very incongruous.
Anyhow, my point is that here in Canada, commercials do not list the side effects. I think they should.

lol Chako. Sometimes I think they would be better off not advertising them after they list 20 seconds of side effects.
And Laggy, I work with a guy that almost died from too much Ginsing. He was taking an insane amount of it everyday though.

Whether it's "all-natural" or made in a laboratory, it's a chemical, and chemicals have an affect on the body in one way or another. Just because it's an herbal medicine or a "natural" product doesn't make it automatically safe to consume, which I think is what many people incorrectly assume thanks to media saturation and advertising propaganda.
Also, people likely opt for the herbal/all-natural medicine probably because it's less expensive than manufactured drugs.

Bottle drugs are just part of the big conspiracy to make some dick rich.
i have noticed that its mostly a mental thing if they work or not. If you dont think they are going to work they wont or if you think it will work they will.
that is what i know to be true with my body. example i took 2 500mg sleeping pills, 5 hours later i fell asleep, when my gf takes 1 of them she is out in 5 minutes because she thinks they make her sleep.

depends on the drug, dose and person. and occasionally it is the placebo effect. and im pretty sure that your belief in the potency of antibiotics doesnt have a whole lot to do with the cure rate of the infection.
