(plants include beans, maragolds, sunflowers and a bunch of other seed packets)

oh and daisys... im allso thinking about saying 4get plants and just go dig up a patch of grass and see if i can keep it alive

Posted by: redwench

well, a number of possibilites exist. but the most likely is that youre overwatering and underlighting the little darlings. i bought a christmas cactus in late october i believe. it bloomed in november/december. i have yet to water it, and its still green.

*makes note to water the damn thing soon*

most plants dont need a lot of water, so thats probably what youre doing wrong.

try singing to it ... my mom says it works

No, not beer. Water.

Plants don't like beer.

Do a science Experiment....The Effect of Beer on Plants

Posted by: TheeMon

well that could every well be it lol but ok if i were to have over watered one and its allrdy real tall how can i keep it alive?

Posted by: redwench

you probably cant. just stop watering it, unless its really dry.

Posted by: TheeMon

well right now i have it in a little pot(the 1 with a whole in the bottom) then i have the pot in a big bucket filled w/ dirt... i just put it in there yesterday after it shot up real high...

Posted by: redwench

well, if the roots havent already rotted, youre probably ok there. but the plants get "leggy" when they dont get enough light. which is hard to do indoors unless you have special lights. dont put them in the sun in a window tho, theyll cook.
you can try putting them under large fluorescent lights, about 6" away. but you have at least 2 different problems here.

Cut the pot-ting soil in half with sand from the back yard. There is too much nitrogen in that soil for most outdoor type plants. The plants grow radiply without forming adequate root structure and then drop over and die. The sand will also increase drainage to keep it from getting root rot.

Posted by: redwench

depends on the dirt. many of them are soil-less mixes, and cutting with sand would be very detrimental. if its actually soil, then you can amend it. but if its labeled for seed starting, DONT TOUCH IT!

Posted by: TheeMon

first of all i wouldnt be growing that kinda stuff in my house... second chalko LOL seriously lets get off the drug topic and get back to plants lol

Most of the potting soil sold at KMart or WalMart are classed as "heavy potting soil" which is only the start of a correct mixture. Some typical mixes:

Geraniums (Indoors)
2 parts heavy potting soil
1 part peat moss
1 part sharp builders sand or perlite

Most House Plants
2 parts heavy potting soil
1 part peat moss
1 part sharp builders sand or perlite

Seed Starting
8 part peat moss
1 part sharp builders sand or perlite
1 part vermiculite

Note that the list has sharp builders sand. Sand for concrete mixes is too fine. Sandbox sand has a sanitizer that will kill the plants. Sand, not soil, from the backyard is usually coarse enough to work. The seed starting mix has no potting soil as it is too dense for proper root growth.

Unless the soil you purchased has a mix similar to these then it must be conditioned. When I worked at a greenhouse, we used sand from the yard out back and steam sterilized it in preparation for use. The same can be done in an oven for small quantities if you do not wish to purchase it.

how bout the sand from a river? lol

Posted by: Darky!

River sand makes for good sweet potatoes.

Avoid the fines on top. All you would be after is coarse sand so that it doesn't settle through the mix and set up like concrete. Sand from a river bed would definately need to be sterilized.

Posted by: redwench

its much easier to just buy seed starting mix, which isnt hard to find.

Posted by: TheeMon

yeah lol and rockjock ur right id deffanatly have to be sterilized u ever see what they dump into the ohio river? ehhe i have... + if u dig more then 2 feet down in the sand u hit sewage... i think ill just go dig some dirt off the hill.. its real rich n sht my aunt said its good for plants

Yes. Unless you are doing massive plantings you might as well purchase and get pre-sterilized media.

You may still have problems with top soil from the hill as you may be importing some hungry critters into to pottings. Farmers would normally use insecticide during soil prep for planting. Greenhouses start with sterilized soil. Either way you are trying to keep bugs from eating at the plants as they get established. I prefer starting with sterilized soil over using insecticide. There are some organic compounds that you can use after the plant is established that aren't so harmful to you or the environment.

A hometown nursery could set you up better as they would know the pH and condition of the local soil. Find some old fart that has been working there forever and talk to him/her about what you want to do. Most will freely give advise.

Set yourself up so that you have good tilth, drainage, and sunlight. Start more seedlings that you need and cull out the weak looking ones. Have fun!
