Help....Upgrade Processor Gigabyte GA-6BXC Motherboard
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Greetings All
Need help upgrading the processor on my Gigabyte
motherboard (GA-6BXC)
Currently running a 466 Intel Celeron @2v...and want
to upgrade to a Intel P3, 650/100 (Owners manual
says that's the max for this board.
When I install the slot 1 processor the system freezes
during boot (during mem count).
I have set the two switches as per the owners manual
but with no luck.
The old 466 is running at 2 volts where the new 650
is at 1.65 volt. No where in the owners manual does
it show where I can change the voltage.
I have also updated the motherboard firmware to F3 (the latest and greatest)
The Award Bios is version 4.51PG.
Anybody have any other ideas of what I can attempt??
Thanks in advance for your help and ideas.
(yes...i've email Gigabyte 4 times, with no response)
Tanks
Gary

Well ok, did you set your SW1 (external clock) to 100, and your SW2 (frequency ratio) to 6.5 (dip switch: off on on off)?
If you multiply those two, it will give you your 650 Mhz CPU frequency.
Likewise, I got this off of Gigabyte’s web site.
"Q14. What's the DIP switch setting for Celeron 600Mhz~766Mhz CPU on GA-6BXC?
A14. GA-6BXC need PCB rev.2.0 and above. The new FC-PGA packaging Celerons all have their clock ratio locked, therefore all you have to do is set the FSB to 66Mhz and plug the CPU in. The correct frequency will be displayed and used upon boot-up."
Hmmm...no mention of voltage on their web site. Nor does there seem to be a way to change it on the motherboard itself short of doing it in your Bios (if that is an option, and I did not delve deeply into the Bios literature off their site). Chances are that it would automatically set it for correct voltage if it supports it. However, I have read all PDF manuals for the 4 PCB versions of your motherboard, and they interestingly state that the top CPU is 633MHZ at the front of the manual, but 650Mhz at the back in the chart listed for SW1 and SW2 settings.

Yep....i set sw1 to 100 (all off) and sw2 to off on on off.
Don't know what the Dip is for the anything above 650.
The sledge hammer is setting on the file cabinet..
Thanks for your thoughts!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What happens when you try to exit the memory count? If it freezes there, it could be the board doesn't like your memory. The Celeon was running the memory at 66Mhz unless you overclocked it. Are you using PC100 memory? If so, you may need to increase the latency in your BIOS for the memory to work right at the higher speed. (IE CAS3 instead of CAS2, RAS to CAS delay, etc.) Refer to your manual for different memory BIOS settings.
