Morrowind versus Dungeon Seige
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Okay, Morrowind is due out on the 27th and Dungeon Seige on April 5. Now which of these games do we actually buy? Any opinions? The screenshots of Dungeon Seige look awesome but I'm not sure the gameplay will be as good as that of Morrowind. Would appreciate anyone who may have more in depth knowledge of these games providing some additional insights. Thanks.

Can't go wrong with both of them.

Well shit on me. Had no idea that morrowind was due so soon.
I'm planning on picking it up, it should be moderately cool at worst.
It's single player only though.

I think a year from now, Dungeon Seige will be the one we will remember. Maybe even still be playing.
That doesn't mean Morrowwind won't be any good. I think it looks like crap personally.

wow
maybe its just me
but i find it surprising they still make games with no multiplayer
i would probably get morrowind if it had multiplayer
and now i probably wont for that reason
oh well :|
if it turns out to be an amazing game dont let me miss out ;D
ion - did you mean it looks like crap graphic wise? or composition wise?
Posted by: Ion Silverbolt
I think the game just doesn't appeal to me. The game mechanics don't sound cool to me and yes, I think the graphics don't look all that great.
I'll wait to see the user response on it before I consider buying it.
Multiplayer is cool, but some games are better appreciated in single player. Not everyone is into multiplayer.
Dungeon Seige appeals to me in so many ways, it's hard for me not to get hyped for it. It's got:
1. Great graphics.
2. Replayability. Diffeent campagins and a growing mod community.
3. Single and Multiplayer. Diablolike interface.
4. Good music. Jason Soule's is a great composer.
5. Simple gameplaying interface.
I'm hoping that it recaptures's what Diablo 1 did for all of us. Diablo 2 was a big letdown for a lot of us. I think this game will be our redemption.

I have to admit I too am not impressed by the graphics in Morrowind. Not that graphics make or break a game for me, but after viewing the Dungeon Seige screenshots they do seem to pale in comparision.

Well Daggerfall is still one of the best RPGs of all time, and it is only a single player game. No other game can come close to the role playing experience. Granted it had a lot of bug issues.
Out of the two, Morrowind is the one that I have been waiting for the most. I have both of them pre-ordered though.
Morrowind looks simply amazing graphic wise. I'm all for gameplay, but we'll see when it is finally released.

Games can do one of three things: good single player, good multiplayer, or average single and average multi.
Multiplayer is so overrated. Few people actually play the multiplayer in most games that have a multiplayer mode. It's only a select few (and a few genres) that actually get played much in multiplayer mode.
Personally, I find that usually multiplayer detracts from a game.
Either make it multiplayer only, or don't bother with multiplayer at all.

Well in retrospect I guess I'm hoping Dungeon Seige is the top game. Why? Because I remember the old Diablo community where I used to constantly play with REVENGE, JANNA, Lonara, anakin, Loralon, t'kron, titan, ELLENOFTROY, etc. etc. I would have to say that is still the most fun I've had gaming online and if there is a game that can bring all these folks back together I think that would be awesome. Aside from StarCraft which everyone played when it first came out, there has not been another game that has duplicated this community, at least for me. So here's one vote for Dungeon Seige!

nova this is so true. there are a lot of games that would have benefited from the extra dev time if there had not had been multi attempted. most games taht try to do both fail horribly at multi and deliver a lackluster single play. one in particular that could have been incredible is silent hunter2 the lack of a dynamic campaign ala aces of the deep style really busted that game and it had so much and does have so much going for it. but lack of that one feature and the crappy implementation of multi leaves it lackluster at best. i will be soooo glad when the military sim developers stop with the scripted campaign games where if u dont do X exactly as planned u cant go to mission y.
but even games that are multi only a lot of folks spend their vast majority of gametime doing single play stuff ala mmorpg games. there are VERY few games taht have good potential for both and i can count on one hand the games that did deliver both in the entire history of gaming. multi will almost never make a game but it sure as hell will break it

Well one strike DS has is it will use the Zone for multiplayer. Sure it will have TCP/IP, but really the big reason Diablo was so big for us was battle.net. We had a cool channel to hang out in.
No other game is or has offered something like that since. Battle.net now is so overrun with trash that it's hard to bear going there anymore either.
I think DS multi will rock, but organizing games with fellow OTSers might not be so easy. We'll probably have to use ICQ or this forum to organize big multiplayer games.
I wonder if the zone can even take all the abuse. Especially with Jedi Knight 2 also swamping their servers.

Hmm, well that sucks.

"DS OTS Dedicated Server"
Posted by: Tarkus
Now that sounds good!
Tarkus
Posted by: Ion Silverbolt
DS does not support a dedicated server. However, if someone started a game, it would take a long time before you would run dry of game content.
It will probably be just as easy if we all have a designated game number we all use on the Zone. Either that, or we could start dusting off OTS chat and use it to assemble an adventuring posse.

I agree 100% with Nova.
Morrowind is by far the game of choice for me. I think it's funny how you all think Morrowind looks like crap. I think Dungeon Siege looks worse. Heh. Screenshots don't really do any game justice, so I'm not basing a lot of my decision on it. What it comes down to is gameplay and story for me. Both may do fine in that category, but I'm still sticking with Morrowind in that respect. I loved Daggerfall and the open-endedness of it. You could do so much, it was mind-boggling.
The one thing I'm concerned with is DS's reputed level creation/module creation tools. That Vampire "The Masquerade" game boasted of the same sort of customization and look how crappy it really was. It was very hard to make new scenarios/adventures with. I'm hoping DS doesn't have those same problems, but who knows.

I have always bought games with single player mode in mind first and foremost... the only game I bought wherein I was conscious that it was multiplayer-only was Asheron's Call, and I didn't last 3 months into it... It was also one of the reasons I didn't buy Ultima Online or Everquest years ago...
I hope they never run out of single player games - the games that brought me the most enjoyment were all single player games ... although playing with friends online are great fun, it isn't as much fun as I did when I played games like Baldur's Gate ...

Haha, true true. But Vampire's single-player was awesome.

There's no reason why a game cannot have successful Single and Mutliplayer both. It just takes longer to make both of them top quality. Diablo 1 was great at both. Diablo 2 a lot would say the same although I thought it all sucked. Doom, Duke 3D, and Age of Empires are just a few that come to mind.
More time than not though, you're right. Games like Baldur's Gate should never have even attempted multiplayer if they weren't going to polish it.
Single player games are cool, but the player interaction that multiplayer offers usually increases the games longevity. Especially if the game in question offers both with top quality.
For me, player interaction offers more in the way of a realistic RPG experience. The whole fetch item y at location z and insert sceptre A into socket Q is getting old. All fantasy RPG's seem that way to me. I haven't tried BG2, but I heard that one was a lot better. I wasn't pleased with the first one though so I never did try the second one out.
Posted by: JANNA
the second one is just even more of those cat and the king quests ion
Posted by: redwench
bg2 is fun. just because you dont like a game doesnt make it bad janna.
Posted by: Asmodai
I agree with redwench. BG2 is probably one of the best RPG I've ever played. It's got a great plot and storyline. There's multiple endings and a whole crapload of optional quests. It was actually quite fun and replayable. I've gone through the game twice now and plan to play it one more time as a really evil bastard assassin. =) The NPC characters were all memorable and interesting and sometimes funny. Though I don't know why everyone loves Minsc; he's funny, but I thought Jan Jansen was even more hilarious.
This is all coming from the guy that hated Baldur's Gate 1, if that means anything....
Posted by: Null Actor
Yeah, BG2 was tons better than the first. And if I ever find my cds I might try and finish it.
Posted by: Spider
Yep, same here, absolutely hated BG, liked SoA a lot and thoroughly enjoyed ToB, that expansion was simply brilliant. http://www.opentechsupport.net/foru...cons/icon14.gif http://www.opentechsupport.net/foru...cons/icon14.gif
Posted by: BobSkywalker
i played bg1 most of the way through and it wasnt too bad, but i dont think i would recommend it to other people
then i was out of my mind one day and bought bg2 and i played it for like 2 days and thats about how long it lasted
more of the same really....that and the fact i had to load up my saved game like 100 times an hour cause once again all of my party members were killed - i was apparently the suq at bg2
Posted by: Ion Silverbolt
Now that I think more about it, I probably am not a RPG fan at heart. I think i'm more into action based fantasy games. When I don't play those, it's FPS's.
I seem to like anything if it's good though but exceptional to me is usually more action based.
Posted by: Canis Lupus
I may or may not be a true-blue RPG-head, but I have always put story over gameplay everytime I play a game
Posted by: Ion Silverbolt
Actually I think it's just hard to find a good RPG, but when you do, it stands out a lot. I mean how many RPG's actually make you feel like YOU have become someone else in this new virtual world?
I think with each year, we get closer to the possibility of such a game. A great story is also important. A Role can't be fun unless there is a challenge for your altered persona. A story alone doesn't make a RPG though but a game can be fun with a good story.
Posted by: Canis Lupus
Baldur's Gate series always allowed me to assume the role of the character I'm playing ... that's the closest I ever came to actually being immersed in an RPG world (with the exception of pen-and-paper, of course) ...
Then again, I haven't played much MMORPGs to make a good distinction ... I only played Asheron's Call briefly and most of the time I was too busy killing Aurochs or otehr monsters to actually do some "roleplaying"
Posted by: Ion Silverbolt
lol, yeah that's the problem with MMORPG's, the mechanics in them do not support role playing at all. Most players in those games just want to "be the best", and the games have been developed with them more in mind.
My vision of a great MMORPG would allow you to be very productive with even very little to no combat. Or at least make some non-combative skills that offer a lot of exp points for using them sucessfully.

The trailer of Morrowwind looks pretty nice.

Dude! Play Deus Ex!
I'm not kidding here. Everything you want is in deus ex, if you'd just get around to PLAYING it!

Hrm. Just watched the morrowind trailer. Does look good... but looks like it has some framerate issues.
Well, hopefully they don't interfere with the gameplay.
Posted by: Null Actor
I have to admit though... that's the best damn water I've seen yet in a game.
