Simple thing, really. If two members are bantering back and forth (unless it is flagrantly abusive) I see no fault. If one party takes offense I'm pretty sure they know the appropriate actions to take. If not I'm sure some one would direct them. If someone is tired of a particular thread popping up it's quite a simple thing to just ignore it, move on to the next item of interest. Being a forum titled 'Rants and Raves' I'd expect to see some venting of steam, and even the building up of a good head. So be it. Until a moderator is compelled to step in (be it by the members, good taste, or in keeping with the forums purpose) there really is no need. It's not my place to tell anyone how to do their job, but I am just utilising the forum for its purpose. To refer to it as a 'shitfest' and instruct us to 'grow up' is, I feel, slightly out of bounds in this case. No harm was coming from us acting like fools, poking fun at each other. We have to behave like adults most every place else and for some this is the one place where they can engage in some simple, mindless stupidity. Now to be direct, precise, and to act like an ass. The main reason the thread was closed was because it went way off topic. There was nothing to be gained by leaving the thread open since everyone seemed to not care about the thread topic anymore and it was turning into pointless bickering.
Normally it would have been left open regardless, but it just got out of hand so it was better for everyone to close it. I support Nova's decision.

okay well thats a reason, i guess. wasnt the one given, but whatever. just make sure you know that's why he closed it before you agree with that as a decision is all. and so it's clear now, this topic's point is to promote the pointless bickering that has no other appropriate place. jedi olympics, lessons about pinatas, whatever.

You have every right to start a bickering thread. The last thread was supposed to be dealing with Olympic issues. Which why it got closed when it turned into something else.

Nope. Some off topic comments are tolorated but when it gets off 2 pages worth, then it's stupid to keep it open. Especially if the topic starter wants it closed.
It's not like you can't start your own thread or anything.

So if I create a thread entitled, say, "Donations to the homeless children in Afghanistan," with the purpose of raising a call to action for generosity, and a person (or two) comes along and says Afghanistan does not deserve pity, hence their children should just starve to death, does that mean that thread automatically becomes an Afghanistan children bashing thread?
The content does NOT dictate what the thread is about, the title does. Along the way, it may get off-topic, but that's something entirely different... when someone sees a topic entitled "olympics" they expect something related to olympics... that's just common sense, y'see...

The thread stays. And anyone can post here as long as they aren't breaking any forum rules.' I was still interested in posting, spider appears to be, and i'm pretty certain others with more sense to keep their mouths shut are to. still agree with nova?

canis aye i do see how one would expect to find something relating to sports in a topic named such, and there was, about 30 posts or so. after which it took loops, twists, and turns in content. does that make it about afghanistan bashing, dunno never got that far. i think it fair to let a topic progess as it may, off topic is not objectionable. if someone followed the topic the entire length and was still looking for olympic related material, theyd know not to look there anymore.

well its pretty clear to me that this is going nowhere. just thought id say my piece. didnt think it was handled properly and didnt appreciate the insults coupled with no opprotunity to reply, hence this thread. for someone to come in and shutdown a harmless topic that had moderator involvement, even moderator participation, and to go so far as to call it a 'shit fest' and suggest we grow up frankly pissed me off

spoil what? the whole issue was sour to start with. ive gotten the brush off, i said so. i havent even seen a post about this from nova yet. ive had ion tell me he agrees with the decision, and ive had you tell me to read the guidlines stating that any post can be closed at anytime, but ive yet to see even a 'shutup you bother me' from the one who closed it. and that dear friend is even worse than being brushed off

Well you weren't directly bothering anyone until you started THIS topic. And it's clear you're just trying to start trouble. So i'm going to close this topic as well.
If you want to take this up further, use private messaging instead of cluttering the boards.
