GRRRRRRAAAAARRRGGGGHHH! Being that it's 6:32AM and I am incredibly caffinated... I must vent!
I have been trying to successfully install and configure a version of Windows2000 for several hours a night for two weeks! You may scoff at this, but this box must be built to workplace standards and security, with many special programs added and some serious registry editing.
I am about to throw this damn thing across the room.
I have reloaded the entire OS 5 times, uninstalled and reinstalled various programs, been lacking correct instructions and permissions, lacking the domain admin password needed to add the comp to the domain.. And now that I think I finally have it all loaded and configured.. OFFICE DOESN'T WORK AND OUTLOOK CAN'T FIND A MAIL SERVER!
I am going to glare defiantly at the computer for a while and will a major hardware component to burn itself out so I can just get a new computer.

Windows Update
A little known fact about Windows 2000: The "2000" doesnt refer to the year but rather refers to how many hours you will spend installing it.

heh, sorry shal but that is pretty much what happenes to me any time i try to do... well pretty much anything. asked my opa once how to change the directional bulb on my car, next thing i know the brakes, transmission, radiator, and some thing (i still have no clue what it was) are being charged to my credit card and loaded in the trunk. is your sys admin senile by any chance? that sure makes things fun

It sounds as if you are on the receiving end of several conflicting or incomplete requirements for your secure desktop.
Your problem happens to be my area of work. I design the desktops to be administrative or lockdown, while secure and yet allow certain applications to run.
Recently, I have begun work on securing users for Terminal Server.
Usually, my problem involves clients that provide solutions instead of requirements. There is usually a "right" way to implement security on Windows 2000. Carry-over from the NT world abounds and confuses.
I utilize a variety of tools including secedit, Active Directory Group Policy Objects, logon/logoff scripts and startup/shutdown scripts.
As you hinted, many people on these forums may not appreciate the complexity of these problems. I do.
If you have any specific questions about a problem, let me know here. Or email me. Some questions should not be posted in public.

A while back I posted:

Thanks, Kane.. but I'm pretty sure the main problem is somewhere between the keyboard and the chair. I've never messed around with Win2k before. The instructions I've been given are extremely clear and must be followed exactly, and I just keep screwing up, I guess.
That, and we've got a pretty convoluted networking, permissions, and policy structure -- go figure.

Shal... let me give you the answers to all your problems... I have the image with all the registry updates.. and its up to security standards I'll burn you a copy of it I guess that would work if you were only trying to build one, and not learn how to lock it down.... which i bet is what you are learning. If you are locking it down so bad that apps cant run.. shoot me an email... I have a tool that helps you find out which keys aren't acceisble to the normal users.
I've had to build one using those same directions... its quite a list
she's not kidding when she say's its serious registry editing either... the list is deep...

Yeah, it's a learning project. And I've got admin access, so access to the keys isn't a problem. It's just the fact that I haven't had time to sit down and do it all at once, and stretching this out over weeks tends to screw things up. Thanks anyway, Spork..
