Hey, I have some thoughts on this issue. Check the simplest first. DII is a massive game to install on your hard drive. Did you use up all your room installing it, and now have under 200 megs of hard drive space left?
It may not have enough room to open up all the temp files you are going to need. I understand that you are starting the game from your cd rom. Try starting it from the shorcut icon on your desktop that DII should have installed. Make sure the PLAY disk is in the cd rom drive. Next question, have you gone straight to the folder where the executable file is and clicked on it directly? Don't know why, but sometimes this works, and if it does, make a new shortcut from there to the desktop. DII has some pretty hefty requirements to run it, let alone run the game well. If you are playing expansion it requires even more. If you do not have AT LEAST a 233mmx with 64 megs of ram, and 12 meg video card, configured right, you are not off to a good start. I'm not saying that is your only problem, but it can just add to the confusion. If you have questions, I can probably help with Diablo II. I play this game ALL the time and have so for a long time, on several computers, with different configurations. So, holler back if none of this helps.

how do i no howmuch room i got on my hard drive?

Posted by: FearTheClown

and how do i no if i am configured right??

Posted by: FearTheClown

and yes i tried to start it from the folder the diablo cd just starts spinning for a couple of second and nothin happen

well, so now we are getting somewhere. How do u find out how much space u have on your hard drive? jeeze, what a question, I'm surprised u even know what a hard drive is, LOL. I m sorry, but I DO have a mouth on me. Instructions follow:
from the desktop, open "my computer". Go to hard drive C, right click on it ONE time. A little drop down menu will appear, click on properties.
Voila! a little pie chart will appear, showing used and unused space. Recomended space needed, 200 megs.
If u don't have that much space, u gotta lose sumthing. Try cleaning out temp internet files, trash bin, cookies folder, blah, blah blah. If you don't kno the routine, and no one else in your house does either, it is gonna be FULL!!!!!! (This junk also makes your computer run
real SSSLLLOOOOWWWW!) Then, don't forget to reboot, and have at it.

Anything else just tell me i can get it

OK, only thing you didn't mention was your graphics card. game recomends minimum of 12 meg 3D card. I have seen it run on less tho. Have you done a FULL install? It takes up much more room on hard drive, but you have room to spare, so who cares? A full install will run better. But, just reinstalling wont get it, you have to do a full uninstall. If you get a black screen, you might want to check your video settings. While initially loading the game, there should be a point where it tests to see what graphics drivers to use, direct draw, glide, ect. If you didnt get that screen, there is a problem in loading the game. Also check your graphics setting in control panel, see what it says. How many colors is it set to run? 256 colors wont work, you have to be running at lest 16 bit or higher. If you cant run that many colors, then you video card bites, and it won't run the game. Another thing you might try, is put cd into player, let auto run start, use the window that opens from the cd to check your options. The area you should look at are the video options, try different stuff,
Well, that gives u some stuff to try, good luck

I Dont know if you need it...but more useless info that blizzard wanted to maybe you do too!?

CPU MODEL:
[1x] GenuineIntel Type 0 Family 6 Model 5 Stepping 2 Brand 0 448 MHz

Sound Card:
[01] Sound Blaster PCI64 Direct Sound Driver (ES1371.VXD)
[02] Game Compatible Device (emulated) (WaveOut 1)
[03] Voice Modem Wave #00 Line (emulated) (WaveOut 2)
[04] Voice Modem Wave #00 Handset (emulated) (WaveOut 3)

Posted by: Shalome

Nah, we don't need any of that info. Now that I know your basic system specs, can you tell me exactly what your problem is? I mean, does the game start at all and then hang? Do you get a black screen? Does your computer lock up? Do you see or hear anything game-related at all (Blizzard logo, etc). Do you click on the icon on your desktop and then NOTHING happens? Do you hear the CD spin up?

Posted by: justinious

hmmmmmm.... can I get your graphics card spec?

Posted by: BlinkMe182

I double click on the icon..ande even try to start it from My Computer....Nothing happens...No screens, no errors...No disk Reading!..nothing...then it just sits there...Like i said though, when i press CTRL ALT DEL
It shows "Diablo ii" and "Game" and "OpenMe (Not responding")

My graphics card....hmm where can i get the specs for it...

Right-click on the desktop->properties. Then click the settings tab. Click the advanced button. Doing this will bring up your Vidcard's control panel.

OK, your monitor is the Gateway VX900. Your vidcard is the STB Velocity 4400. Your card is, shall we say, extremely lacking. You can find the specs for it here. If I were you, and all else fails, I would buy a new graphics card.

Posted by: Shalome

I checked the specs on that card and it says:

Complete DirectX5.0 and DirectX6.0 support

But.. D2 runs on DirectX8.something. Have you run the video test function to make sure your card can even handle the game?

Posted by: BlinkMe182

Yeah the Vid. test ran through and says it successfully finished it without any problems, but i will look into that and try buying a new vid card, thanks

You won't need anything too fancy to run D2, but I would advise getting a mid-range card with at least 32MB of RAM. Goto pricewatch.com and search for GeForce2, this site usually has inexpensive vid cards. Watch out for generic "clones", and make sure the card has ample tech support. Pine, Asus, Nvidia are all good brands. Good luck!

Posted by: Shalome

Have you run every available Windows update from http://www.microsoft.com?

Posted by: BlinkMe182

i havent ran any windows update...But i have had many suggestions to get Gforce Vid Cards...Mostly Gforce 3....But thanks!

Posted by: sapceghostmonst

you should try reinstalling it. sometimes that helps. it helped me when i had a similar problem

Posted by: BlinkMe182

Ohhh...my god i have reinstalled it over 10 times!!...got all the windows updates, if the vid card doesnt work im probably going to end up selling the game

Posted by: Lenlog_07

Hey, this is by far the most informative site for D2 TS i've found so far.
And Alas i'm having the same problem as the creator of this Post.

My comp specs are:
Windows 98
Pentium 2
128 Meg ram
9.5 Gig HD w/ 450meg free
Voodoo Banshee
Matasha DVD-Rom SR-8583
Lite-On LTR-24102B(Cd-RW)
Voodoo2 3D Excellerator
SB AudioPCI 64D Legacy Device
Direct x7

When i double-click both the icon D2 folder and it's link on the desktop i get nothing displayed on the screen but the Cd begins to spin and it appears on the Taskmanager as Diablo ii and Game.

I have installed the patch and I have reinstalled it many times. it's worked fine on my comp before and it even worked for about an hour til i tried to go to act 2 then it said i didn't have enough memory(i only Had 240 meg free then).Vit Test Ran Fine It said i could run it in either In Direct draw(2D); 3dfx Voodoo Banshee OR 3dfx Glide: 3dfx Glide.

Thanks for making this site too.

Posted by: danglier

is it possibly a bad batch of discs, sure it loads up but does it do it properly, go back to shop and change it, try it to see.

Posted by: Lenlog_07

I'm using Diablo II: LOD

I've had the Cd for a long time so i don't think i can exchange it but i'll try a friend's CD and see if it works.

Posted by: Lenlog_07

Tried the friend's CD it works fine on his comp but mine does the same thing.
