GeForce4 Ti 4200

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: SKYHN

I know a lot of people have been wanting to know about the Ti 4200. More and more info has been comming out about it. The $200 pricetag is very nice, but theres a catch...

The article I read today, here, talks about it. Basically it says it may even be as low as $150.

Thats pretty cheap, especially since its a GF4 Ti, but theres a catch. It has 64mb of Ram, not 128mb. I guess Nvidia or whoever, decided to change it. I believe when tomshardware first said something about it that they said it has 128mb of ram.

It still performs better than the GF3 Ti 500 though. That article also shows it overclocked, and in some cases it beats out the GF4 Ti 4600!

Just thought I'd get a thread started about it since at one time I wanted one of these.

Posted by: Bobaroo

Damnit, I really wanted it to have 128mb of RAM, i guess I will just hope to get the GF4 Ti4400

Posted by: SKYHN

Yeah, I was surprised about that. When I first about the Ti 4200, it sounded like it was just like the other GF4 Ti's. Im glad I didnt wait for it.

Posted by: Bobaroo

Now hopefully the GF4 Ti4400 will go down $30

Posted by: SKYHN

Its already at like $240 on Newegg.

I got totally ripped at circuit city. It was $320 there. But I wanted it right away so I guess thats the Price you pay.

$249 for PNY
$269 for VisionTek

I still wouln't mind waiting a month for it to go down more.

Bah!, a couple weeks ago i purchased a geforce 3 ti200 for 140$. I feel like an idiot : /

Posted by: Sarc

Don't feel like a idiot c0re, a GF 3 Ti200 is a very capable card.

It should last you for quite some time. Unless, your like the rest of us and can't stand not having the latest and greatest.

I don't think the GF 4's are going to drop in price much more, at-least not until the next revision comes out, gee, let me guess, fall?

Anyway, personally, I'm perfectly happy with my vanilla GF 3, for now.

Posted by: SKYHN

I dont know if there will be any Revisions for this line of Nvidia cards this time. Rumor has it that Nvidia is spending all of its time now working on the NV30 chip. Its looking to be pretty powerful. The first line of NV30 chip cards will have 128mb DDR ram at 256 bits. I cant remember the clock speeds, but they are above the GF4 Ti 4600. The NV30 cards also have 2 main GPU's.

Nividia has ditched the "GeForce" name too. ATI has also ditched "Radeon". I wonder what names they will come up with next...

Here is a good article on the GF4 Ti4200.

Posted by: uh...ok

Hrmmm I wanna find myself an OEM version of the GF4 Ti4400. I think I could do without the software bundle if it'll save me some money.

(looking at the Gainward bundle)

I want one of those 128MB Ti4200s, o/c the RAM up to spec with the 64meg version, and possible the CPU by 10MHz or so.

Yea, I want to do the same thing. Because $199 is not a bad deal at all.

Just remember that the GF4 is hard to o/c without extreme cooling, so you want the gainward one. Although the articles I have seen said that gainward might not even make a Ti 4200, and if they do, it will only be the 64mb one.

Asus has a pretty good cooling system too, that one might withstand an o/cing.

Posted by: uh...ok

So 128MB Ti4200s exist?

Where?

-uh...ok

Posted by: SKYHN

I saw it on tomshardware I think. But the 128mb card has a lower memory clock than the 64mb, so you have to overclock it to get Ti 4200 64mb Performance. Some companies may just up the clock speed though.

Posted by: Digitalphatman

Umm where do get that the gf4 ti 4200 will be hard to overclock??

Its the same geforce 4 core that runs at 4600 speeds. And from what I have seen it can be clocked to 4400 speeds with out much trouble. Maybe the mem will not overclock as high, but the 128mb version should have no trouble making it to the 64 mb speeds.

Posted by: Swilo

Also keep in mind that the 64 and 128 meg versions will more than liekly be using the same ram, and if one can run at 500, why not the other?

Posted by: SKYHN

It all has to do with cooling. The GF4 Ti chips run very very hot. All the guides I have read about OCing the GF4 Ti cards have said you need very good cooling to do it. Cards like PNY, Visiontek and other brands that dont have Ram Sinks cant OC very high because of the heat.

Thats why the gainward ones are best for OCing because they are like a Giant Heatsink with 2 fans.

Im just saying, dont buy a Ti 4200 expecting it to get up to the Ti 4600 because the cooling wont be good enough. Im not too sure, but all the Ti 4200 cards I have seen DO NOT have ram heatsinks on them at all.

Posted by: Digitalphatman

"Stock speeds on the Ti 4200 are 250/500 on our 64MB model. Using coolbits successfully I was able to overclock to a stable speed of 290MHz on the core and 585MHz on the memory. Keeping in mind this is 4ns RAM on our card and with no heatsinks and no BGA, this is one hell of an overclock! Go Hynix! 4ns is a rated speed of 250MHz, so even at stock it's at its theoretical max. But even still, this RAM overclocked very well. "

http://www.hardocp.com/reviews/vidc...200/index5.html

If you look i do beleive this is almost ti 4600 speeds they got it up to. All with stock cooling(that crappy fan thing, not the one on the 4600's or 4400') and no ram sinks

Posted by: SKYHN

Well, buy one then and overclock it. Just remember though that they overclocked the Nvidia Reference card, not a brand name card.

Posted by: Swilo

Sheesh, forget I ever mentioned upping the RAM speed to be on par with a worse card.

Posted by: SKYHN

I was just saying its likely that when the brand names of these cards come out, they will run a lot hotter than the reference cards. 2 reasons for that can be: The cards are designed different, such as parts are in different spots OR the company deliberately will design it to run hotter so that people will buy the higher cards.

We will just have to wait and see when Tomshardware and the other sites get the brand name cards and put them to the test.

I wish you could find me a card that did not go along with the nvidia reference. Companies are to worried aboout makeing the cheapest dam card to make the design any better(altough nvidia does design some good cards. And 2 how do they make the card run hotter? And SKYHN i am not picking on you I am just curious to see ur logic on this.

Posted by: SKYHN

Im just saying, most companies will change the card around. Or at least thats what some of them did with the GF4's that are out already.

Im not trying to get into a big debate here cuz Ill end up going over my head, but I would wait til some sites get the actual brand name cards and test them, then you will know for sure about overclocking and all that other good stuff.

Posted by: Bobaroo

Yippi! They are out!

A Gainward one is at newegg for $199. I have to get one!

And they do not have ram sinks.

Posted by: Bobaroo

Damn....No more

The Gainward one I saw had the 128mb model with the same specs as the 64mb model. 500mhz memory and 8.0gb/s bandwidth.

The visiontek one had the 128mb model at speeds of 444mhz memory and 7.1gb/sec bandwidth.

Posted by: SKYHN

You gotta be quick with newegg.

Get the gainward. Better cooling.

Posted by: Bobaroo

I was a little disappointed when I saw a piture of the Gainward card. I was hoping it would have RAM sinks and the same fan that is on the 4400, and 4600, I was hoping it had the same exact cooling.

Instead It does not have RAM sinks and has the same fan has the Gainward GF4MX's It looks like a Gainward GF4MX card

Posted by: SKYHN

GF4's dont need ramsinks because the type of ram they use runs very cool, or so I read at madonion.

Posted by: Bobaroo

But RAM sinks would help for overclocking.

That is why I want a Gainward, So i can OC it.

Posted by: Swilo

Not to sound like an ass, but you do know that even the 64 meg GF4Ti4200 stomp the shit out of any GF3 card...
Why OC when you don't need to?

Posted by: SKYHN

I tried to O/C my Ti 4400 and I couldnt get it to run stable.

Well in 2-3 years when the GF4 is a middle card, I would like to get it faster. I don't want to OC it right away....I want to OC later down the road.

Once I get my new video card is there anything I should do with my computer? Should I flash my bios, or download anything else? I know I have to download the video card drivers, but I have never installed a video card before so I am not sure what to do.

Posted by: mambotech

where can I get the grainyard Ti 4200 for $200

You shouldnt need to flash your BIOS unless the card will not work or you get incompatabilities, such as lots of lockups or errors.

When you get the card, you will have to first boot up and uninstall the drivers for the old card, shut down windows, remove the card, install the new one, boot up, put in the driver CD that comes with the new one and thats it. Of course a book will come with it telling you all that stuff too.

Posted by: tkron

When I installed my pny Gf4 Ti4400, on my Asus CUSL2-C board, I had a lot of problems playing games. My BIOS was version 1.03, I had to flash my BIOS to the current version 1.09, and all the problems disappeared.

You must be very careful if you flash the BIOS. You need to back up the old BIOS, and let the new BIOS fully load without powering down your computer or restarting it, until told to do so. READ the instructions VERY carefully.

Posted by: SKYHN

The only problem I really had with my card was getting it in the freaking case. The thing is huge, it was 2x as big as the TNT2 that I was replacing. I almost didnt get it in there, which would have pissed me off royally. And to make matters worse, the Cable that puts the 2 USB and 1394 ports on the front of my PC ran right down the middle of the PC. I had a hell of a time with it.

I didnt have compatability issues really. I did have a problem with the Card and DAOC but after investigating it, figured out its the Graphic Engine for DAOC, which is highly outdated now. Good thing it wasnt my BIOS cuz theres no bios update for my Mobo. And thats not a bad thing...thats...a good thing!

I read somewhere though that the Ti 4200's though are 2 inches shorter than the Ti 4400 and up, so it shouldnt be a problem for most people I guess.

Posted by: Bobaroo

Do you know any Manufactures making the GF4 Ti4200?

I have seen Gainward and VisionTek, but no PNY, leadtek, abit..etc

Posted by: SKYHN

Ive only seen Gainward. But its still early for them so they will start poping up for them soon. The demand is going to be pretty high for them.

I really hope they start coming out soon. Hopefully by the begining of June there will be a ton of them out, and will be pretty cheap at Newegg.

I will be happy as long as I have this card for War3

Posted by: Bobaroo

The 64mb models are begining to show up now. They are $60 cheaper then the 128mb model.

Posted by: GeForce_4_

Any way I also loved the Geforces !

When I then started noticing that they always need patches and cooling (extreme)

SO I bought an ATI Radeon 7500 at 64MB

And since then ATI changed my point of vieW!!

So did voodoo making their voodoo 5 X

Whoa at what 128 of ram! Very Hyper AGP gaming
