MS Tech Support - you gotta love em!

Or do you?
I made a report to MS Tech Support about a week ago asking about the Low Framerates on DS. They responded with something about finding a "VidCard.csv" file on my hard drive, and renaming it to "OldVidCard.csv". Well to make a long story short, that file does not exist on my hard drive. The Techsupport woman told me that it is a "Critical file" and for me to completely reinstall my video drivers according to my video cards manual. Well obviously I wasnt gonna waste my time doing that because it would get me no where, Ive had the card for 2 or 3 weeks. So after responding to her "If this file is so critical, why do all my other games run perfectly without it?", which I guess took her several days to come up with something, so I got this response view attachment).
Now I know that GPG has said there is a FPS bug in the game and that it will be fixed in a patch, but that was after I had started this whole tech support thing, and I continued on with it just to see what response I would get(for fun I guess, its free anyways). So what I dont understand is, why doesnt she just say "There is a framerate bug in the game that will be fixed in a future patch." instead of giving me this other crap? I know that what she has suggested will not fix it because I know about the bug, unless some new technology was developed where bug fixes are psychically transfered to already burnt CD's.
I would rather hear someone tell me it will be fixed soon than give me the ol' "completely uninstall then reinstall" run-around.
MS Tech Support - What good are they?

No offense, but coming from you, anything negative said about Microsoft should be taken with a grain of salt
as if you were "ever" satisfied with whatever MS does, hehe

why are u worried about what framerate the game is displaying?? does it stutter every time u take a step orr play smoothly. i suspect it plays smoothly. even on a AMD. i could careless if the game says its getting 1 frame per hour as long as thing is playing the graphics smoothly and not interfering with my gaming. ive seen my framerates (when i turned taht frame thing on) stay at like 2 and then shoot to 100 just standing int he same spot, ive seen it moving around do that as well. so i just turned it off and played the game. frankly i think its a perfect example of the overclocker mentality. a game only needs to display 30fps+ to be playable anything over that is cake. not all games need to display 1 fps faster than ur neighbor on that hot new cpu u just bought.
im running DS on a P3 1000 256 megs ram and a gforce3 vin is running it on a P3 1000 512megs ram on a cheap gforce2. both comps work just fine playing DS. we dont bother with displaying the framerate cuz it doesnt matter in the slightest.
as for any proffessional tech person u contact they generally now nothing about computers or how to solve a problem without looking at a computer driven database of answers by means of a search engine. my advice just wait for the first patch then u can see all ur framerate stuff which dont mean a thing anyway since it wont change the way the game is played one whit.

That wasn't necessary.
I personally have never dealt with MS Tech support, and probably never will.

i dont understand why if you know the answer your still pushing. seems rediculous and even sorta messed up to me.

From Scav, that's saying a lot.

*Points out to janna that his AMD XP kicks a p4 2.3ghz arse, and cost 100$ less*
*Also points out how expensive RDRam is/was*

Janna, I already made it clear in the other thread in this forum about the whole framerate thing. To repeat myself: I did not pay $320 for a new video card to get low framerates. Everything else I have runs at 90fps, there is no excuse for DS to go from 50 to 20 to 30 to 10 to 20 to 30 to 20 to 40 to 10 to 20 to 30 to 20 to 40 to 10 over and over like that. That is what im getting and that is not smooth.
You know theres a bug in the game when a P3 700 with a GF2 MX, 256mb of PC133 SDRAM, Win98se and DX8.0a is getting a constant 60fps+.
Also, the AMD totally owns any P4 and its been like that for some time now. The P4 has run its course. Clock speed dont mean jack anymore. Its time some people wake up and realize that.
I pursued this with tech support because I wanted to see what they had to say. Wouldnt you think the publisher of a game would have direct contact with the designer for technical problems?

Maybe there's something wrong with your $320 video card or its free drivers, hehehe
Besides, what are you still bitching about? You know there's gonna be a framerate patch, yet you still asked their support department a question where you already know there's not gonna be a full-proof answer. So in essence, you're just trolling them for something to say against Microsoft. At least you got an answer, as opposed to some companies where you get an autoresponse and no clear suggestions *cough*Blizzard*cough*
But why am I trying to convince you, anyway? Your comments about anything Microsoft has lost credibility a long time ago

I was just showing that MS tech support isnt always helpful. I used them one other time and they fixed the problem.
I emailed the tech support BEFORE I knew about the patch. I found out about the patch 2 or 3 days after.
Wouldnt you think though that they would have contacted GPG for help on a solution, since MS didnt do anything on the game and wont ever do anything on it besides make the box look pretty and put it in stores?
Posted by: Darky!
I'm betting Microsoft didn't even make the box look pretty. Probably just funded the projects, and did the publishing.

That's why I am confused ... you're saying MS had a limited hand in developing the game, yet you expect them to be fully responsible and knowledgeable for it, and even castigate their whole tech support department with a quote saying "MS tech support, what good are they" ... that's where your bias comes in, my friend...
Posted by: SKYHN
Then why does the technical support link on the website for DS send you to MS Tech Support?
Posted by: Canis Lupus
The thing here is that they gave you an answer ... it was not what you wanted, but it was an answer nevertheless ... and how do you know the planned patch wasn't revealed AFTER your email to tech support? The game has been out, what, a week? Granted the support communication was not as prompt as lightning (just the way you want it), but what can you expect from a a tech department as massive as Microsoft, especially if it was not a game they actively developed. I mean, take Blizzard's support department - they have fewer games to provide support on yet they lag behind in terms of customer satisfaction. The same goes for almost ANY official tech support department for any game.
So in effect, this thread you made was in fact a rant rather than something that can be debated on or factually proven ... so I am moving it...

It took them 1 day to respond each time. "Chris@GPG" said there was a framerate bug in the game AFTER the second time MS Tech Support responded to me. The 3rd and 4th time they responded was about 2 or 3 days AFTER the "patch" was talked about.
I was satisfied with the response time. Since they didnt have anything to do with the actual development of the game, why are they the tech support for the game if they know nothing about it?

Because 99% of people who need tech supports are a bunch of idiots who can't do anything on their computer, let alone run a game. These people also have shit computers that have who knows how many inherent problems with software, hardware, viruses, 3003024981234 installed programs downloaded off the net, and are inherently cesspools.
These people don't need tech support, they need to be occupied. That's what MS tech support does.
If the developer had to deal with every idiot that doesn't know how to install their game, they wouldn't have any time to do things like, say, make the patch that you want so ****ing bad.
Tech support is there to make people feel like their little problems matter.
Anyone who wants real tech support goes to those who know; like us. Of course, those are also the people who are smart enough to know that tech support offered by companies is usually a waste of time.
Think about it: We get probably 10 posts a day from people needing some sort of tech support. Now, doesn't seem like much, right? Then, consider that this is actually a pretty small site, and despite how good it is, few people actually know about it. So say there are 100 people a day on the net looking for tech support. For every one person who looks for tech support in the right places, my guess would be that there are probably 9 or more others who contact 'official' tech support, cause that's what the help buttons point to.
So, say that there are 1000 support requests, per day. Now, consider, that an average game development team ranges from 12-30 people.
Do the math. There is your answer.

That is so true.
It took me 2 hours of Dell support with NO answer just to find out why my microphone had such a low volume. I got fed up, told the tech good night and ICQed Swilo I think. 2 messages later, problem solved.
Sad thing was, Dell support was asking me if I had my microphone plugged in, etc etc.

DeFreak, they're simply going through procedure... like we do in OTS. (or did)
Great post Nova... couldn't have said it any better. Except I would not have used the phrase, "There is"...
/anal retentive english mode off
MS has had a clean record with me so far. Last time I called them for tech support regarding my mouse (when it died), I only had to hold for a couple minutes, and someone got on the line with me. Service was great and friendly - and I got my brand new MSIME in less than a week.
In the larger sense of MS... I never really appreciated Windows until I started using Linux. Now I do.

There is so much truth to that statement. People whine and complain all the time, yet most of them have never tried any of the 'alternatives'.
