Pigeons. ****ing. Pigeons.

Okay, this is the deal. There are pigeons on my balcony. Large numbers of them. I'd guess, at any given time, there are 15 of them sitting on my windowsills, and on my balcony. Flapping. Hooting. Banging their ****ing heads against my windows. Shitting.
Now, I want to get rid of them. And keep them gone.
I'm hoping to get some humane responses, otherwise, I'm just going to buy rat poison and line my window sills.

Put a stuffed cat on the windowsill.
Posted by: Shalome
Get one of those ultrasonic bird keeper-awayer things.
Posted by: Null Actor
ultrasonic bird-keeper-away things?
Sounds great. Where would I get one? heh
Posted by: Gunslinger
At the ultrasonic bird-keeper away shop of course.
duh?
Posted by: Null Actor
I'll save the rat poison for you!!
Posted by: Gunslinger
Yummmmmm. Rat poison!
I'm suddenly reminded of the SNL commercial perody about the rat poison in the big bag with the dog on it (looks like dog food).
"Petchow! Petchow! Petchow! Rat Poison."

Damn I hate pigeons, I solved the problem by moving out of the city
Posted by: Fenix2004
Owl statue there is one in the old town i used to live in...
Posted by: redwench
nova, in many places its illegal to kill doves. so dont even go there. you may end up poisoning something else too, since you cant control what eats it.
there are things on the market, sound machines, reflective tape, maybe try a motion activated something or other. if you cant fix it yourself, call your landlord.
Posted by: Null Actor
They aren't doves, they are pigeons. And I don't want to kill them, cause then I'd have to dispose of the bodies.
Posted by: redwench
doves and pigeons are the same thing. just depends on whether you like them or not
Posted by: Swilo
The likeness of a predator (preferably with some motion to it) or certain chemicals (non-toxic, they just don't like them) should do well enough.

Hahahaha.

A couple modified bug zappers lined with bird seed can probably take care of your problem. And it's humane. They won't know what hit them.

Check this out ---->Birdguard its $250 though. Scroll down to the bottom of the page for a "cheep" option hehe
CHeck this out too... Bird-X
I was looking around and most products are barbaric. Like this for example

dude, he lives in an apartment. this is what landlords are for.
Posted by: Heathen
Oh yeah... screw it... call your landlord and tell him to get some Bird-X
And fix that dripping tap and fix the damn toilet too while he's at it.
hehehe

All I can think of other than what has already been stated is firearms, they may not be humane, but you can blow off some steam "bustin a cap" in a flying rat..... stupid gutter birds.
Posted by: Swilo
Don't actually shoot the birds, just let their brains associate sitting on your window with getting the shit scared out of them, they shouldn't be coming back.
Only problem is shooting guns in a living area is kind of illegal.
Shaggy, that third one is absolutely disgusting, but the second one would probably work best.
Posted by: Ion Silverbolt
You could always hire some chump to sit on the roof in a gorilla suit. Yelling at the birds and swatting the air will not only scare the birds away, it will be funny.

Hi, this is Canada.
Posted by: Darky!
Grab a firearm and ome blanks.
.22's work well.
Also, the spike thing isn't disgusting, how is it disgusting? It stops birds from landing on a surface. Its not like they land on it and die.
Theres also another option. Go buy some wire, and lay it where the birds land. Have it hooked into sometihng electrical, and that low voltage. it won't kill them, but they won't com back for a while... My grandpa used to have a birdhouse like this, he'd let starlings build there nst inside, and when it was full, turn it on. This wasn't low voltage though, more like 220. Instant BBQ. Mind you, starlings are pests, so don't tell me about killing starlings beeing inhumane.
Also, instant rice works well http://www.opentechsupport.net/foru...cons/icon22.gif

Hmm, if a pigeon goes into cardiac arrest coz of the sound of the gunshot and dies on the spot, is that still considered a felony?
Posted by: redwench
um, darky, voltage doesnt kill, amps do. 220 lines carry a much higher amperage than 110 do. and grandpa sounds like a psychopath.
Posted by: Spider
I don't think guns are legal in Canada..
Posted by: Gerbilo
Yeah, the spikes are fine, i saw them a few places when I was down town, the birds don't land on them, if they do they are stupid and deserve what they get heh.

Posted by: redwench
to relocate them if they become a nuisance or are roosting inside a building. as i said, in many places its illegal to kill them.
Posted by: rockjock
You don't need a 12 gauge to dust off pigeons. A kids bb gun will do the trick but you will still have the bodies to dispose of. The trick is opening up the window enough to stick the barrel out without them flying away.
Clean and freeze them until you have enough to make a casserole. As some of the boys would say, "Them's good eatin'." Let me know if you need any wild game recipes.
Posted by: redwench
this isnt the wild west. he lives in the largest city in canada. i dont think they want him shooting even a bb gun. ive had windows shot out with those.

Voltage provides the potential to overcome the body's resistance so that the the lethal level of current can be reached. E=IR where E is voltage, I is current, and R is resistance.
Higher based line voltages like 13.8kV are used so they current carrying requirements are lowered. You can then use smaller gauge conductors. Ignoring reactive and three phase applications, W=EI, where W is watts. The higher voltages are used so that less current is required to reach the same wattage requirement.

Probably on purpose!
C'mon, lighten up.
Posted by: redwench
220 volts is nothing however. its the amps that kill you. run 10 amps through someone, theyll probably die, even on a 110 line. its possible to survive 50k volts (lightning bolt), though certainly luck is involved there.

I didn't bother read too much of the thread. Why the heck would there be so many pigeons on your balcony? Is someone nearby feeding them or something? Those birds are not all that stupid but I've never heard of swarms of pigeons sitting on one balcony.
Posted by: Xtren
And by the way here's a suggestion from one of my friends: Take the stereo and but it on your balcony. Blast some Dream Theatre as loud as you can and you shouldn't have anymore bird problems.

Instant Rice.. simple as that.. no body to dispose of.. they spontaniusly explode.. yeah there are some feathers there.. but those can be swept away..
Other options.. Spikes.. they work ok.. Owl Statue.. works well.. untill they go to peck it and it doesn't move.. you could get some pigeon feed and put it on someone else's balcony.. that way they would go there.?? don't know.. we just shoot them with BB Guns here.. they aren't to loud.. and the birds always fell into the alley.. we had a big pool at my parent's house.. and they would crap in it.. so my dad got us a bb gun and said go for it..
Posted by: Swilo
You're too mean. Just because they're pidgeons doesn't mean they need to die.
Posted by: Darky!
Yes.
Instant rice.
Ever wonder why they stoped throwing rice at weddings?
Because the birds eat it, then explode.
Now you know.

I think shooting pidgeons is illegal where I live. It is a quick and easy solution though (if you are a good shot).
Posted by: redwench
yeah, just great. then you have dead birds and pissed off neighbors.
Posted by: Shalome
Rice + birds = explosion??
