Lack of Sportsmanship
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have noticed a lot of times that sportsmanship is not present in athletics the way it used to be. Take for incidence the recent lacrosse game we lost. We all played terrible and we lost, which we deserved to do because we did not play well. Now my school excels at athletics pretty much because we are a very large school and live in an affluent community so we are not used to loosing. All the kids on my team were throwing their helmets down, saying the other team sucked, one kid even knocked our bench over. It was a real embarassment. In our football game you cant walk onn the field without hearing a racial remark or an F bomb directed at you..Even in computer games.... Take Battle.net for another example. Most of the time when you win a game where u dominate you get called "gay" or other bad words instead of the simple "GG." Its really ridicioulous latley has anyone else noticed this?

It gets that way in everyday life and work also.
The best thing to do, is learn to lead by example. Don't let it get you down.

Ditto to what Kane said .... and just remember that "most" of the people that play games, online or IRL, or compete in anyway ....... "attempt to intiminate" people and end up making themselves look like "fools" .... so just take them for what they "are"!

How can people be poorsports when they lose games? I understand getting angry over sports and stuff but getting angry over losing to someone in a video game is kind of dumb.

I agree, but what you see on the net and in these games is just a microcosm of society in general.

It's much easier to blame a loss on someone else than illuminate your own inadequacies.
Case and point - someone loses a match of Starcraft, and claims that the other player was nothing more than a hacker.

"sorry my allies sucked" theres a classic one
Posted by: Shalome
You can also kinda blame it on the American mindset that "If I didn't do well, it's because the other person SHOULD BE SUED!" It's that way in business, in courtrooms.. Parents pressuring teachers to give their kids better grades so the kids get into good universities, politicians who continually get re-elected even after their corruption is publicized..
Basically we live in a culture where public esteem is based on image rather than actual merit... high school sports is just a reflection of this.

Last night Me, Fenix and Nfested played a few games of SC, in which we dominated them all. There was not one game where our oppenents said "GG". All we heard was "you guys suck" "you fags" "If I had better partners I would of kicked your ass" etc.
Even though that is the internet and it is not a sport, it shows how people are now a days.
As for sports, My Hockey team was very bad(2-16-2 )
When we would lose games half the team would say that the other team sucked or it is the ref's fault. Noone ever blames stuff on themsleves anymore.

Same idea:
Overweight? Don't blame the fact that you haven't gotten off the couch since 1987, don't blame that empty Doritos bag in your hand.. just take diet drugs!
Can't sleep? Don't bother cutting out caffeine or cigarettes, just take Ambien!
Sad cuz your dog died? Don't bother trying to get over it, just take Prozac!
Your kid doesn't pay attention in school? Don't blame the underpaid teachers, overcrowded schools, mind-numbingly repetitive curriculum, or your lack of parenting skills, just give the kid Ritalin!
You get the idea. It's not your fault. Everything is made better by lawsuits or medication. Everyone is above average, everyone's a winner, everything is peachy-keen, all the time... You just haven't found the right combination of drugs and money to realize it for yourself yet!

heh. like all those surveys they do of drivers. i think it usually pops up around 70% of drivers think they are above average........

84% of Americans believe everyone is more rude in public now than they were a decade ago.
36% of Americans say they have been rude in public.

A lot of people exhibit poor behavior when losing. Some of the teams I face on my school Tennis team overreact when they. It is "tennis etiquette" to shake hands with your opponent before and after the match. Sometimes when my school beats another school some of them don't even shake hands and just walk off the court.
Poor sportsmanship doesn't happen that much though in Tennis, but more for other sports.

Well, there atre a few poorsports in Tennis, I forget his name at the moment but I know he lost to Layton Hewitt at the US Open in the semi-final last year.

John McEnroe has made a fortune being a "poor sport" and throwing tantrums, (in tennis) ..... but thank goodness that is not the "norm" in professional sports ..... sure teaches the younger generation a lot, heh?
Mike Tyson is another one that comes to mind

Everything is doubleplusgood!

I'm of the opinion that Mike Tyson's theatrics are something we can legitimately blame on a pre-existing mental condition.
He has the psyche of a 4 year old.

I think Bobby Knight and Billy Martin are good candidates for the icon of poor sportsmanship. However, both men did actually make those sports interesting to watch.

At least Ali has a legitimate excuse, I think Tyson's is "inbreeding"!

Bob can go with me on this one. I have always thought it was funny in hockey how the guys will break out into fights and proceed to egg each other all through the games, but as soon as the game is over, they shake hands and congratulate each other.
I have always found that to be interesting, but at least admirable.

It is good that they shake hands in order to sort of reconcile with each other. That they way don't seem like inconsiderate bullies to the media.

Hockey is the same as wrestling nowadays.
10 years ago, the instant a fight even looked like it was going to start, the refs were in there tossing people out of the game and handing out penalties. Nowadays, they sit back and let the fight go on, cause it entertains the crowd.
Pathetic.

I blame jerry springer and reality tv.

I disagree. The patterns and timing were insanely simple, and once you got that down, the game was easy.

How is Reality TV involved with it? I don't see how Survivor could cause wrestling referees not to stop fights when they happen.

lol. i thought the rule was that they will let them fight until the one of the fighters gets a huge advantage over the other in which the fighter cant defend himself such as pulling his jersey over his helmet.

It is all for the fans nowadays.

He took it really far, bit Evander's ear off. I heard that they've started feeding him before fights now.

Tyson is just.......
....he's........
.....what the **** is wrong with him anyway?
He's dangerous. I remember an SI article I read once (I think SI) where he was doing a person-to-person interview -- and the interview commented on being geuninely frightened. He feared for his safety, potentially his life, just being in the same room with the man, and that didn't have as much to do with Tyson's strength as it does his mental state.
I'll have to find that article.

*Trying to think where Gunslinger's signature fits into all this *
