ID SOFTWARE PARTNERS WITH ACTIVISION ON DOOM III

Activision Set to Distribute Highly Anticipated Game Worldwide

London, UK – May 3, 2002 –id Software and Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) announced today that Activision will be the worldwide licensed distributor for DOOM III, the latest instalment in one of the most successful franchises in PC gaming history. Built on id’s revolutionary new 3D graphics engine, DOOM III draws players into the most frightening and gripping 3D gaming experience ever created.

DOOM III is currently in development for the PC by id Software and will debut at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in Activision’s booth #1224 in the South Hall.

“DOOM III will change what people expect to see and experience in a PC game,” said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. “We couldn’t be more psyched about DOOM III, and are thrilled to debut the title at E3 with Activision. Get ready to be terrified.”

“We are excited to continue our successful and long-standing relationship with id,” said Larry Goldberg, executive vice president, Activision Worldwide Studios. “I’m sure that id fans and action gamers alike share our anticipation for the latest incarnation of DOOM, which is one of the most important franchises in PC gaming history. There is no doubt that DOOM III will be at the top of every gamer’s most wanted list.”

First released in 1993, DOOM became a phenomenon in PC gaming history and is widely recognized as the catalyst for the first-person action genre. Since its inception, the franchise has been one of the industry’s best-selling PC series, with DOOM III already the most hotly anticipated first person action title currently in development.

Doom III was announced sometime mid-last year. They even had in-game screenshots out.

Posted by: Daniel

oh, eeerrrmm, well i've just received this press release, maybe it's just a UK thing.

Posted by: Sarc

Actually, this is the "official" public release of the Doom III project being under way. Although we did know that production had started some time ago, it has not been official till now.

Posted by: SKYHN

Im not surprised they are going with Activision as a publisher. id has been using them a lot lately.

Posted by: Daniel

yes, for almost everything, i'm going to try and get a preview copy of it, and let you all know what it's like

Good luck with that! Gamespot, IGN and just about every other major gaming site or mag has been trying to get that forever.

The only screens out right now are screens from the Mac World Expo from 1 or 2 years ago. id is keeping in game details and stuff pretty down low.

Posted by: Daniel

well, it may take a while, but i'll be sure to do my best

Who cares?

Yet another id technology demo.

id hasn't made a game since commander keen.

No way, these can not be in-game screen shots??? Can they?

Posted by: SKYHN

Yes they are

All the graphics are rendered in real time, no pre-rendering. Thats gonna take some serious GPU power.

Posted by: Daniel

Right, that's it then, I think i'm going to buy a new computer so that it's delivered the same day as Doom 3 gets released

(F**K ME!!

3 page E3 report

And some more links here.

That one has a link to a movie.. I'm about to download it (97mb).

Posted by: SKYHN

Downloading as we speak

Posted by: SKYHN

That was a good Video. Was choppy but still good.

Hopefully the gameplay will be equally as awesome as the graphics.

Posted by: taco_fox

According to one of the articles, they now have some sort of sci-fi writer on their team. Maybe there will be a plot..

I need a new video card too. Dynamic shadows = teh shit

Posted by: SKYHN

Found a 10 min video that has actual in game footage. The quality of the video is utter crap, but its worth it to watch for those psyched about the game. Its 35mb.

I downloading another video, about 78mb. Its gameplay footage too, if the quality is any better, I will post it.

Who cares? LOL

id Software developed Quake III Arena, which was a revolution in FPS in its time.

If id is developing another FPS and revolutionizes FPS as it did Q3A, it will definately top the charts!

Now ask, WHO CARES?

LOL..

Quake 3 = Suckage.
I'd always play UT, or CS, even after Q3 had been released. Now I play CS and JK2.

Are you saying there wasn't a plot in Doom and Doom 2? There was a story there, however vauge they may be. In doom, your a space marine, sent down to a military complex on mars, only to find out everyone theres is, well, erm, dead, and that deamons are everywhere. So of crose after 8 or 9 levels you get to this gate thingy and close it down and the deamons supposedly stop coming.

Doom 2 is more or less the same thing.

Yes, most FPS games have storylines that could fit on a single page of a manual. Almost all the id games have been like that. Of course, Doom didn't need a plot. Personally, I could play the single player over and over again because it was so fun. I can't think of another FPS that has ever had me so hooked.

Posted by: JANNA

quake3's only contribution to gaming was the engine itself. the game of Q3 was utter crap. there hasnt been a decent FPS since halflife and its add-on games. the fps world has been sorely lacking with all the game makers trying to cram graphics into games instead of gameplay.

Posted by: Ghetto Blasta

no, i thought AVP2 was very good! i didnt play it all the way through as it ran like crap on my machine, but what i did play of it as a predator was barrels of fun! cloaking, and hunting the humans with the pointy stick, doesnt get better . and playing as a marine was just downright creepy!

Posted by: MADhix

JANNA, I couldn't agree more. But, there is one thing that you forgot to mention.

Q3's mods for instance, RA3 is what brought gameplay into perspective for Q3. Combined with the Q3 engine, it is more than just entertaining.

Posted by: Bosk of PortKar

I thought Doom3 was going to basically redo the original Doom storyline, only better.

The movies have had their graphics stepped waayyy down tho.

This is one FPS that I will be getting. (along with Duke Forever, if it ever comes out. aptly named thats forsure.)

Posted by: Null Actor

If you thought quake 3 was 'revolutionary', then you have seriously bad taste in games.

Personally, I agree with penny-arcade on this matter.

Anyone who says Doom 3 looks like a good 'game' is on crack.

I mean, give me a break, what 'game' have we seen? Okay... he shoots... what else?

Posted by: Daniel

yeah, that is a point, whatever happened to Duke?

Duke Nukem Forever is one of your good 'ol E3 running Jokes. It was announced or something like that at E3 over 4 years ago. At each E3 since then its had something there about it or had a release date stated(I dont know about this year though).

People should hunt DNF like they hunt Bigfoot.

I once saw someone say: Why is Duke Nukem Forever TAKING FOREVER?!

Posted by: Daniel

LOL, it was looking like a really cool game, a perfect bland of humor and action. I remember that it was going to use the unreal engine, then switched to Q3 (or the other way arround) - at the moment i've got no idea which engine it will be using

Actually, it was using the Q2 engine to start with

Point?
Its duke, and you can't go wrong with duke.

Edit:
This doesn't look to 2dish to me...

Posted by: Daniel

I've seen this game before, it's a kinda side scroler/3d hybred, and looks really cool. - as as you said, it's duke, which means it's going to have lots of class (who remember the original duke, I do )

Posted by: Outlaw

It's not real 3D, you move left or right, the camera turns around a bit, you can't just walk forward or backward, only left and right. That's not 3D, it's fake.

I like Duke, I have this game, it sucks.

Posted by: Daniel

it's still 3d because the graphics are 3d, addmitaddly the gamespy is not 3d, but the graphics still are (3d)

Posted by: Ghetto Blasta

i have yet to see a better duke game than Duke 3d atomic edition

Posted by: Daniel

that remind me of the simpsons

producer: Up and ATOM!!
wolfgang: up and AT-THEM!!!

LOL
