LONDON--Thousands of video game fans flocked to midnight store openings across Europe as Japan's Nintendo launched its GameCube console on Friday at a sharp discount to its rivals.
Nintendo, which has shipped 500,000 machines for the European debut, said it sold 10,000 in Britain in the first two hours on Friday. The launch has been backed by a 100 million euro ($90.7 million) marketing blitz.
The Japanese company, which cut the retail price of its console two weeks before the launch, had registered 50,000 pre-orders for the machine in the UK, said David Gocen, managing director of Nintendo Europe.
GameCube retails for 199 euros in Europe and for 129 pounds ($188.60) in Britain, 100 euros below rival machines like the Sony PlayStation 2 and Microsoft's Xbox. Console makers traditionally sell machines at a loss and earn profits on games which sell at around 40 pounds ($58.47) each.
Nintendo is battling for control of a $20 billion-plus market that now rivals film and music for popularity.
But analysts think it will have a hard time catching up with market leader PlayStation 2 which has sold over 25 million consoles worldwide, compared with Nintendo's three million GameCubes.
Nintendo knows they will make a profit if they produce a game console that their customers can play great games on. That's it, nothing extra built-in. Just a pure game console. This gives the maximum value per dollar, look at the GameCube - it's a marvel of engineering and design, and only $200 US.

There are more excellent games to go along with RE this year to make GCN a console with a solid library of games.
