Error decompressing sprites

Last night on B.Com while the guys were playing Counter Strike and Starcraft, I mentioned how much of a pain this error was. Someone mentioned a workaround for it, and then the subject dropped after it was said it had been addressed in the forums. Can't find anything on TG or here <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0">
*snif* (very small voice) --->help me.

That's news to me. I have heard of no workaround for this error, nor seen it posted as I ready every post that goes through the tech forums here - or at least I try to.
I would like to know about the existence of such a workaround as well. Good info to drop on people when they pop in the OTS channel whining.

Heh heh. The story so far..
The bird has been pulling out his head feathers in a vain attempt to ascertain WHY Blizz uses us, the customer to do it's troubleshooting...
Heres what happens *ahem*
Me: "play, play, play, kill, mutilate, maim, destroy.. FRY him my minions.."
Windows: "DOOT!"
Me: "Uh-oh" taptaptaptap...
It's at about this point 90% of the time windows stays locked up and I have to hammer reset.
SOMETIMES I can alt tab out and see a message that says: Error decompressing sprite. After I press OK, a few seconds later...
I see the dreaded Unhandled exception error, stare at it sadly, and hit ok, watching my Diablo 2 box on the taskbar go *poof* along with whatever super-ultra-rare chaotic-evil bow I have found for my Bowazon..
So off I go to Blizzards automated "No help you, you poor schlub..." website.
Here is what it had to say about:
Nvidea and SB live cards: unexplained lockups with latest drivers? Uninstall D2, Defrag, scandisk, reinstall and GOOD LUCK SUCKA. It might also be your system overheating. Buy a new fan. Great. Like a 32 CFPM fan on my heatsink aint enough..
Error decompresing sprites: (Oh-hoo! They know something..) It may be the DMA setting on your CD-ROM, uncheck or check BOTH the sync data transfer, and DMA box in properties for your CD ROM. (..PSYHCH!! Bastards.)
Ok, I will try it. What the hell. See here for further details inna few days...
They go on to say if that don't work uninstall, defrag, scandisk, reinstall, or try cooling stuff with more fans...(notice a trend here?)
Unhandled exception error: (This can often be found lurking around right after the sprite thing, see the begining of the post.) Blizzards ONLY answer to this is "Uninstall, defrag, scan..yada yada yada. Oh yeah it might be heat. Buy more fans."
If none of the above solutions work then send an email to blizzard with a copy of the error text files from your D2 folder..(Like they have not gotten 5 million of these in the last year, and have no idea about the problem...)
ABSOLUTE BLEEP!ing BLEEP!headed *BLEEP! NLEEP! BLEEPITY BLEEP!ers.
I can just see all these emails getting chunked into the circular file right now.
Anyway, of to unclick my DMA and SYNC DATA transfer boxes.
