Domain owners beware!

A new law could put people who knowingly provide false information when registering a domain on the Internet in jail for up to 5 years if passed. The argument currently on the floor is that of the people who reserve domain names in the name of someone else legitimately in the case of a charity or a large company, etc. These people could, in effect, be sent to jail should a judge choose to convict them. There is also the argument of privacy in which some people register domains and provide false information to maintain their own privacy. People need to realize privacy is a myth.....

Reps. Howard Berman, D-Calif., and Howard Coble, R-N.C., introduced the legislation Thursday, targeting Internet address registration procedures that make it easier for Web site publishers to stay anonymous.

"Whoever knowingly and with intent to defraud provides material and misleading false contact information to a domain name registrar, domain name registry or other domain name registration authority in registering a domain name shall be fined...or imprisoned not more than 5 years, or both," the bill said.

the key wording is "intent to defraud". if i register on behalf of someone else, that is not intent to defraud.

as with using an assumed name, its legal as long as you dont do it with fraudulent intentions. yes, children, you are legally allowed to use any name you wish. provided you dont use it to commit a crime, its legal.
