The future of GPU's - Ati, nVidia...Matrox?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: SKYHN
The last few weeks have created a buzz for the world of GPU's. nVidia announcing their new NV30 core cards will be out by August, ATI working on something that will "Destory everything else that's comming out" and then theres the, well im going to call them the "Silent Assasin" Matrox. If you go here, you will see a flash intro movie that says "comming may 14th". What does Matrox have up their sleves? Whatever it is, they are keeping it very quiet.
But anyways, the next 6 months will be very exciting for the world of GPU's. The NV30 Memory is rumored to be 900mhz and the card will be able to do over 200million Pollygons. Very impressive. ATI hasnt really said much about their cards accept what was stated above(which wasnt a direct quote from ATI, but an "Employee" of ATI telling that to a tech website), I believe their new Core is the R300 or something like that.
Factor all this in with the new CPU's from Intel and AMD and you got some serious shiznit going on. I started buzzing when GF4 was announced, waited many long months and got one which I love. Now Im looking beyond the GF4 into the begining of next year for a new PC. What a wonderful time I will have deciding on what to get, as Im sure many others will have.
And thats not a bad thing...thats, a good thing!
Posted by: JANNA
im just going to continue with the one that has the widest support and tahts the nvidia line.
Posted by: SKYHN
I forgot to Mention the P10 VPU. That will most definitely be interesting...

I'm most interested in 3dlabs card. They have the experience and the knowhow to actually kick some major ass. NVidia's card will be just as fast as ever, and ATI's card will be just as flaky as ever.
Matrox? I doubt they are trying to get back in to 3d considering how bad they've been whipped in the past.

If the Matrox card is at least as good as the GF4, i'm grabbing it. Their driver support is unmatched as is their image quality.

And that's the old ATI card, just imagine how slow a GeForce4 would be compared to their new one

ATI = Crappy drivers.
plzkthx.
Posted by: Outlaw
Take a look at the nVidia 23.11 and 28.32 (WHQL) drivers.
Now those are crappy drivers.
There are alot of systems where the framerates drop down so low you can't play normal anymore with the 28.32 driver.
23.11 was the worst though, half the systems I installed it on lost their ability to enter windows and I don't like going into safe mode to remove drivers because they're crap.
So there!

2 sets of bad drivers compared to ALL of ATI's drivers isn't all that bad. The latest ATI drivers are descent thoguh.
Anyway, you can't argue with ATI's drivers beeing crappy, they are, plain and simple.
And nVidia's drivers are done by microsoft anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter, does it?

I had no problems with ATI's drivers when I tried a Radeon 8500, I didn't have it very long though so I can't really judge about them.
Maybe they are crap, I don't know.
Everyone seems to think so, so it's probably true
Posted by: Bobaroo
This sucks...Just as I am going to get a GeForce4, a new and even better card will be out.
The Geforce4's have been on the market for not even 5months and new cards will be out in a few months.

And what are your PC Specs? If I had a faster CPU, you would get spanked by this. 1.3ghz for a GF4 is a bottleneck.
Posted by: Outlaw
Wasn't my pc but it was an Athlon XP 1600.
The guy now has an Athlon XP 2100 and he says he gets 9000 points now, but I gotta see it to believe it, it sounds a bit too high

I hope it's true. I'm tired of ATI and nVidia being the only choice. I don't have a problem with nVidia, but they are no Matrox when it comes to image quality.

Really? Someone should have told my GF3 that, because it's as fast as ever with current drivers. Neither this machine, nor my machine at work. Unplayable framerates? You should link a source to that if you want anyone to believe you. My GF3s have proved otherwise.
Oh, and Ion, that link is soooooo BS.

Ok, here another one.

And another :P

Ok, now when will all these new cards be out?
I mean should I spend $200+ now on a GF4? Or wait a month or two to get one of these new types?
Posted by: Ion Silverbolt
Well if everything runs fine with what you got now, i'd wait. With 4 competitors instead of 2, maybe nVidia and ATI will drop their prices some.
If they release the Parhelia on the 14th, there should be some reviews from AnandTech and other sites pretty soon.

Hmm, I wonder how much longer my TNT2 will last.
Posted by: Bobaroo
All I want is a video card that can play my games at high detail.
I am sick of using my TNT2 and having all my games at lowest settings and haveing the game still be choppy.
I also want a card that if I buy it now I can have for another 3-5 years with it still being able to play most games.
Posted by: Outlaw
If you go on like this, you'll be stuck with your TNT2 forever.
No matter when you buy, something new will always come out a few weeks/months later.
Buying the best there is, is stupid, it costs too much compared to the speed/quality difference.
3 to 5 years is very long if you look at how fast new stuff is invented.
Posted by: SKYHN
I think those matrox things you posted Ion arent real. Because I saw those same ones on Madonion and they turned out to be fake, it was only an estimation of what Matrox had up their sleeves.
That is impressive though.

Well, that first one is completely different from the one you posted previously :P
And much more believable. And until I see official info from matrox, I'll believe NOTHING.
:P
Posted by: Ion Silverbolt
The flash intro says it all! They wouldn't use one if it sucked..hehe

hah

Holy crap! What a card. Still have to do with my own TNT2, though. I don't control the budget.

I hope this leaked matrox stuff turns out to be true. Especially this stuff (16xAA!):

I don't know if this is all true. But Matrox wouldn't waste a load of cash on nothing, would they?
Posted by: Bobaroo
Well, we will just have to wait a few months and see.
Posted by: Null Actor
You don't even know if they HAVE wasted a load of cash.
And SKYHN, FSAA becomes irrelevant, and wasteful, at higher resolutions.

I hate buzzwords.
Posted by: Digitalphatman
Even If matroxes card is half of the specs that have been posted, its still gonna be a great card. If anyhting it will be on par, or a little better than what is out there today.
And yes NOVAZ is right, att resloutions above 1200 by whatever FSAA is kinda pointless.

Well, sounds neat.
But I hope you guys aren't assuming that 'triple head' will be the best thing since sliced bread... Rendering three times as much takes three times the time.

Yeah, its gonna take lots of power to render that. Maybe it will be more possible when or if Dual AGP ever comes out. But also since it takes 3 monitors, your looking at a lot of cash for monitors. I know I would want all the same monitors, mixing them might look a bit weird, not to mention different monitors with different refresh rates and everything else.
Posted by: Sarc
Personally, I agree with Ion, Matrox fricken' rules!
Makes me feel bad about wasting money on the Geforce 3 I have now, shoulda' waited.
Even if I never use a triple head feature, thier image quality alone is marvelous. (insert drooling smilie here)
I just need to know how much this lovely Parhelia 512 is going to cost.

hey all, does any1 know if a SOund Blaster PCI 64 will work w/ Creative 5.1 5300 speakers?

Sniper hit the nail on the head: waiting is a sucker's game. Bob, I see you post something about buying a new video card in almost every thread.
Just do it!

$450.
Posted by: Ion Silverbolt
The 450$ model has 256 megs of onboard memory. I'm sure they will have other models that don't cost as much.
And I agree with Sarc. On my Sony Trinitron 19" monitor, I have to struggle to read text from 4 feet away from the monitor with an nVidia card in. With the G400 in, I can easily read text.
Posted by: Sarc
Ouch! $450 is painfull.
According to Digit-Life.com, the 256MB version will be close to $500, and the 128MB version around $400. Also that they'll be available in July.
Posted by: SKYHN
Whoa, heres a screenshot of the Parhelia with Triplehead on from UT 2003.
Posted by: Sarc
Um... can we say... "$2000 for the video alone!"
$500 +/- for each 17" LCD, another $500 for the card. OUCH!!!
You'd have to be nuts to put three 17"+ CRT's on your desk!
All-though, to be honest... I'd try if I had the money.
