A funeral mass held for Fortuyn

Fortuyn, 54, was shot in the head, neck and back as he left a radio station near Amsterdam on Monday.

The former sociology professor and columnist, who was openly gay, advocated an anti-immigration policy and attacked Islam for being "backward."

He was popular for his strident attacks against the government and the Dutch system of consensus politics.

his assassination was unfortunate. but both those articles downplayed just how bigoted and hateful he was. its a shame when a bigot gets so much support, simply because he also has other unconventional ideas.

You sure about that? I have a few friends over there, and they say that he was misquoted and the whole thing was blown out of proportion. And considering how often it happens here, is that so hard to believe?

INDEED!

And he was shot in the chest, not in the back.

well, either every article ive read about him, including some before his death, misquotes him, or some people are really and truly bigots. not knowing the accuracy of the dutch media, ill still go with the bigot theory.

So, given the fact you don't trust the reports or the Dutch media.

You decide to formulate a perception of the man based on misquotes and the negative side of reports you don't trust.

So then your comment:

"but both those articles downplayed just how bigoted and hateful he was. its a shame when a bigot gets so much support, simply because he also has other unconventional ideas."

-Would then again be contrived by an equation using what context, Red?
Information you didn't trust?
Perceptions made via misquoting’s?
What math do you use to arrive at your "bigot theory.”?

"But Fortuyn was a maverick populist, not a racist or an identikit extreme rightist.

His party contains a number of black supporters, and Fortuyn backed efforts to help immigrants already in Holland to integrate. The openly gay Fortuyn's objections to Muslim culture were based partly on what he saw as their subjugation of women and lack of tolerance of homosexuals."

This above excerpt was taken from
this article.

In my opinion, Pim Fortuyn was not racist. He was just controversial.

I am going with Nova on this one..he was very easily misquoted for sensationalism by his detractors as well as the media.

i doubt he was misquoted. perhaps misinterpreted, but misquoted seems a bit unlikely.

from the same article:

Fortuyn insisted that Holland was "full up," and he wanted a stop to further arrivals -- particularly from the Muslim world. Controversially, he criticised Islamic culture as "backward" and condemned the failure of Muslims to assimilate with homegrown Dutch.

i didnt say i had a lack of trust in the dutch media. i put more trust in thier accuracy than i do in our media. and i want to know what exactly was misquoted? and what did he really say on that occasion?

and as for subjugation of women and lack of tolerance of homosexuals, HE WAS A CATHOLIC. and most religions also to some extent have those characteristics.

now, was he another hitler? no. he wasnt an extremist. but he was to the far right, and many (although not all) of his supporters are racist and xenophobic. you may not i was not calling him a bigot, although he may have been. i was refering to his supporters.
