Sounds like a time to buy if you have always wanted an Xbox game console.
Microsoft has told major U.S. retailers it plans to announce a price cut for its Xbox video game console within days, sources familiar with those discussions said on Friday.
A Microsoft representative declined to comment, saying the company talks to its partner companies on a regular basis and that "conversations we have with them are confidential."
A price cut for the Xbox has been widely expected in recent weeks by industry analysts who have said the cut could jump-start sales ahead of the traditionally slow summer months. Microsoft has a press conference scheduled for May 20, the first night of the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, the game industry's most important event of the year. The price cut will be announced then, the sources said.
Microsoft released the $299 Xbox on Nov. 15, and industry analysts and executives have estimated it had sold about 2 million units in the United States through March 31. While that was considered a relatively strong debut, the console has not fared as well in Japan and Europe. Microsoft also still trails Sony by 10-to-1 in terms of the total number of its game consoles in the market.
That's a key measure. Microsoft's strategy has been to take a loss on the Xbox machine but make money on related game sales, and a bigger "installed base" of game consoles means a bigger potential market for games.
Microsoft has conceded it is struggling in Japan, and it cut the price of the console by as much as 38 percent in Europe and Australia six weeks after its launch in those markets.
Sony released the PlayStation 2 a full year before its new competitors, Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's GameCube, arrived on the market. Nintendo shipped about 4 million GameCubes for its fiscal year ended March 31, and Microsoft expects Xbox shipments to total 3.5 million to 4 million units for its fiscal year ending June 30.

hmmmm, very interesting....
If the box drops to $200, count me in. $250 and I'll have to think about it....

Just read on ign that a $100 drop is likely. They didnt even mention $250.
Sounds good.

The price drop is $100. There was a leaked Walmart ad for May 24th that had it marked at $199.94. Sony will follow suit and drop PS2 to the same price.
What I wanna know though is just how low does MS have to drop the price of Xbox to get sales? They already taking a big hit in the wallet with it at $299, Immagine it at $199.
And if there is a god, GC will drop in price too and make me very very happy.

Hope that pricedrop filters up to Canada. I'd consider getting an xbox if they weren't 480$ up here.
Well, that, and if there was more than one game worth playing on it.

Well, as mentioned, they anticipated taking a hit in the wallet on console sales. This doesn't really bother them too much. They planned on making their money from the game sales. Lowering the price brings more systems into more homes, thus raising the demand for games -- which fits into their strategy.
Will it work out that pristine? Not likely.

I sure hope it doesnt. I hope the xbox bombs like the Dreamcast. That way, Ill be able to get one, and then get all the great sega games for it (providing the system doesnt bomb before they all come out)
And SKYHN, who said that a ps2 drop is coming? Ive only read that Sony is keeping the PS2 at 299. Yeah, makes no sense to me either. They should drop it, but I just havent heard about it...

Its mostly rumor, but check the Gamespot news archives, there was something in there that said sony was going to announce a price drop at E3.

Another thing: Sony announced that the PS2 CPU and GPU can now be put on the same chip a while back, which will lower manufacturing costs. The units with those chips are supposed to start being put into stores after E3, which would be partly responsible for a PS2 Price drop.

And here it is folks - PS2 Price drop to $199 effective IMMIDIATELY. Now lets see if Xbox lowers their price now or on the 20th
