Nintendo reveals online plans

Nintendo on Monday announced plans to bring Internet play to its GameCube, making the company the last console maker to step into the as-yet unproven online market. Nintendo announced that it will begin selling a network adapter for broadband Internet connections and a modem for dial-up connections--both priced at $35--starting this fall.

The first games to take advantage of online GameCube play will be two new versions of Sega's Phantasy Star Online, the first major console game to offer online play, through Sega's now-defunct Dreamcast console. GameCube versions of "Phantasy Star Online I" and "Phantasy Star Online II" are set to be available this fall. The service will work with most ISP connections.

Nintendo said it is working with other publishers to add online play to GameCube titles, although the company offered tempered enthusiasm for the new role after nearly a year of silence about online plans.

This will be something to watch and see where it goes. Only time will tell if gamers are going to want this, the first thing that needs to be done is fix connecting issues and game play speed not to mention other problems that require patch after patch! Make it enjoyable and they will buy.

Rumor has it that they are working on a "Secret" online pokemon game to be released at the same time FFXI is released.

Nintendo was awfully slow in announcing their online plans.

That "rumored" pokemon game would definitely make their online system a success if it is released.

shall i paraphrase a nintendo statement saying they dont need online gameplay and their console is just for games??? heh

wonder if the "Y-Cube" is going to join up with the "Z-Station" to pound on the "X-Box"..... hmmm

And yet again, another informative console-news-update-turned-zealot-fest has been born.
Thank you tweaker for the news update. Thank you skyhn and nfested for the basis of an intelligent discussion about online console gaming. Thank you janna for bringing in the unnecessary console war factor which has spelled the downfall of this thread.
If people could just stay on topic things wouldn't get ugly.
Oh, and thank you to whoever is going to yell at me.

Anyways, before this gets ugly, I cant wait to play the new PSO on gamecube. PSO was probably my favorite (definatley most played) dreamcast game. I cant wait to waste another couple hundred hours on it.

I for one embrace console online gaming. I jumped aboard as soon as the DC went online with NFL2k and I loved it. I connected at 26.4 and speed was never an issue. Football games were always fair and pso never lagged too bad.

I never really got into diablo or any pc online game, so I guess thats why I dug online gaming with the DC so much. It allowed me to play PSO with my brother in hawaii, and my other friend who was with me in chicago. Im sure all you pc gamers take such a thing as common place, but when we first played PSO (and eventually Daytona USA) online, it was amazing to me.

Enough babbling. I like and support consoles going online. Sega did a damn fine job of doing it, and I can only hope nintendo can improve on what Sega started.

I do disagree with what sony is doing . Socom navy seals as well as another couple anounced online ps2 games are for broadband users only. While that is great for them (they will get lag free games), I dont dig that. I just wont spend $50 a month for online services. We narrowband users (who are in the majority) will be left out in the cold. Thats not a good idea from the buisness point of view to neglect the majority.

So, if Sony's trend of broadband only gaming continues, look for it to be a pretty big flop.

One more thing: Quake online with Dreamcast was damn fun.

Your forgetting about lil 'ol xbox which is broadband ONLY for every game.

Posted by: AK47

Yeah I sure did forget about that. good call

if all my favorite sega franchises which will be on xbox go online, looks like I'd be screwed.

Oh well, the GC will have pso. Hopefully that will be enough.

I havent played PSO before, Ive only heard/seen it. It seems to be a good game though.

Im not too interested in online console gaming, but there are a few select titles that I want to get my hands on: Resident Evil Online, Twisted Metal: Black Online, FFXI and Gran Turismo Online. I dont know too much about any other ones, so I may like another in the future.

PSO is headed to the pc sometime.

Someone here posted a link to a demo you could download, but Im sure its gone by now.

Broadband only is a very very good thing.

i feel very sad for those that cant put down their zealotry long enough to see the humour in all this.

Not if a lot of people don't have access to or can't afford it as of yet.
What might work is having seperate playing areas for people with modems and broadband so they can't get mixed together and cause unfair advantages.

Hooray for not turning into a console war thread!

Yeah, thats what I'd like to see happen. Have seperate servers depending on your connection.

As I said, no way am I paying $50 a month for broadband.

Thats sort of what they did with THPS3 on PS2. Broadband can play in 8 player games. Dial-up can only play in 4 player games.
