Introducing the Matrox Parhelia Graphics card

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

[H]ardOCP has an interesting write up as well as the press release from Matrox on their new "Parhelia" graphics card. While they do not yet have one on hand to test yet, they do go over some of the features this card has. And the feature list is impressive at this point.

With that disclaimer out of the way, we do have some general feelings that we would like to share about the upcoming Matrox Parhelia line of video cards. We've seen the technology work in a controlled environment first hand and without a doubt, the Parhelia has left us with a feeling of excitement. Yes, this statement comes from a guy that games with a GF4 Ti4600.

Not only does the Matrox Parhelia possess the possible ability to dethrone the current GeForce4 Ti series as "King of the Pixels" in performance, but it also seems capable of delivering some features and technology that are quite exciting. A powerhouse with a .15 micron 80 million transistor GPU, with a specified 20GB of available bandwidth out to the 256 bit DDR interface with up to 256MB of on-card DDR RAM.

Check out the rest of the article as well as the impressive analysis chart from here.

I am sooo getting this card. If anyone can dethrone the GF4, it's Matrox. They may not have 8 month product cycles, but what they have always made is top knotch. Especially in the image quality department.

This thing is starting to sound like one serious piece of equipment. Its going to be a tough decsion in the months ahead of which company to go with. There are now 4 players in the GPU world - ATI, nVidia, Matrox and 3D Labs.(I wanna see if ATI's boasting about "blowing everything comming out away" proves to be true, seems like an employee talking out of his butt)

One thing I dont like though is how many sites compare this kind of thing. I think its pretty obvious that the next line or "Generation" of a GPU in a certain family will obviously be more powerful than the next. Statements like "We've seen the technology work in a controlled environment first hand and without a doubt, the Parhelia has left us with a feeling of excitement. Yes, this statement comes from a guy that games with a GF4 Ti4600." That right there is a "Duh" Statement. I guess im just annoyed with that sometimes.

But anyways, the whole future of GPU's is looking bright. That 20gb of bandwidth sounds impressive. So does the 256mb of Video Ram, but it may be a while before we see something that will take that kind of power. But of course with Parhelia with the Triplehead support, its ready for that power now.

Excuse me if I missed this by not reading the entire article, but what sort of consumer cost are we looking at here?

Do know this though, Matrox clearly stated that the "Parhelia will not be [a video card] for the masses". You can count on this being a high-end card in price as well as hopefully long-term performance. Be expecting Parhelia to put you back about US$400.

when it's finally shipping in June the fastest Parhelia-512 cards will carry a price tag of ~$450

Holy crap thats expensive.

I'll hold on to my Radeon for a while thankyouverymuch.

WOW...That is way to much money for a video card. I will stick to getting a GF4.

It's not even anything special. It's just a bigger/faster todays card. It's even lacking in some features.

Personally, if I'm holding my breath for anything, it will be for the new 3dlabs card.

I'm getting it just for the fact that the picture quality will be a lot better. And considering it's supposed to be faster than a GF4 4600, the price isn't all that out of range. At least for something that high end.
