Sony Computer Entertainment America appears to have pre-empted its closest competitor, Microsoft, today, officially reducing the price of PlayStation 2 from $299 to $199 in North America, the company said in a late night press release Monday. The price drop will take effect immediately

Other Sony price drops:

-PSone system goes to $49 (down from $99)
-PS2 Dual Shock 2 controller and 8mb memory card both drop to $24.99 (down from $34.99)

I told ya so AK

I walked by Funcoland today and they are milking this thing. They have slapped stickers and signs all over the place claiming they are having a Big sale on PS2. One of them said "Special - Save $100 on Playstation 2!" Then it has $299 crossed out and $199 written underneath. Is it just me, or is that kind of misleading?

That seems misleading to me.

Now the Gamecube will probably have a price cut for its Christmas season or maybe during the summer in response to the price cuts of its competitors.

Man, a cheaper gamecube would be awesome.

Next check and Ill go get me a psone

With this current price drop, the Gamecube has no advantage over PS2. The Gamecube had no DVD player which was one of the reasons it costed $100 less than PS2. Now the PS2 is the same price as a Gamecube, therefore the Gamecube has lost its edge.

Nintendo must do something to rectify this.

IGNcube: All right, and we're going to throw you a little curve ball here. With Sony and Microsoft dropping the prices of their consoles in the U.S. does Nintendo have any plan to continue to price GameCube as the better buy by dropping its price?

Beth Llewelyn: We have no plans to make any price drop announcements. We set this price to what we thought was a good mass-market price and we still feel that way.

IGNcube: Nintendo still feels this way even if GameCube doesn't include DVD functionality as the PS2 and Xbox do?

Beth Llewelyn: It goes back to our core philosophy that GameCube is a gaming machine. That's what we're about. I don't have any numbers, but my understanding is that most people out there are buying game systems to play games. I don't think that has become a huge selling point.

aw crap

Ohwell, 200 aint too bad

Bah. They will soon change their minds once this months figures come out.

I was hoping that they would bring out the Panasonic DVD Gamecube here and sell it for $199, then sell the Non-DVD Gamecube for $140-150. The Panasonic one though might be in Japan only.

Looks like Xbox is now $199 also, I guess they didnt want to wait another week or 2 to anounce it.

Yeah when I read about the PSX price drop to $49, I stopped and picked one up on the way home yesterday. Man I have too many game consoles now.

OMG, there are some dumb people out there...

I saw a post today on the Sony PS2 Boards that was asking sony to refund him $100 because when he bought his PS2 2 months ago, he payed $299 and now its $199. And he was dead serious too.

Doesn't that seem very naive that Nintendo doesn't believe the fact that Gamecube being $100 cheaper (w/out a DVD player) is a huge selling point?

Nintendo has dropped the price of their controllers and now their wireless controllers are the same price as the original cost of the non-wireless controllers. If Nintendo does cut the cost of Gamecube (which it definitely will) their new attitude seems to be "buy us we cost less!"

Posted by: AK47

Well, I think they will sell quite a few if they make their motto "buy us we cost less"

I know Ill buy one.

And Tecil, $49 for that tiny PSone is quite a nice deal. I know I'll be gettin one as soon as possible.

You can never have too many systems

I just won an auction on e-bay last night for a Saturn, Genesis, 32x, & Sega-CD with a ton of games all for $80. I already have the Genesis and Saturn, but I could always use extras.

Posted by: SKYHN

Damn, I should try and get a SegaCD off of Ebay. I love that system.

Emulation for SegaCD is very early stages right now so like SonicCD is the only game I have that actually works well.

I could understand if he bought it 1-3 days ago, some stores are even honoring that I believe, but 2 months is just insane.
