Norton Firewall question

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: 6404367

I have a three-computer LAN at home setup:
1. Win XP, 256 MB connected to internet via ADSL
2. Win XP, 512 MB connected LAN to computer 1
3. Win 98, 256 MB connect LAN to computer

Computers 2 and 3 are setup using the ip of computer 1 as the gateway so they can use the internet.
Now I've installed Norton Firewall on computer 1 and the program automatically blocks the computer 2 and 3 permission to recieve data from the internet. Anyone know what kinda service, address, or options I have to change in order to have Norton Firewall allow internet connection for the computers 2 and 3?
Thanks.

I wonder if Silent Port blocking is holding you back. Try turning it off and see if 2 & 3 can connect.

Wouldn't you need to specifically allow the MAC addresses of comps 2 and 3 access to comp 1 through the firewall?

double click the globe to open the rules window, under personal firewall on the left, select internet zone controll. There will be 2 tabs in the center of the window , Trusted ( green ) and restricted ( red ). Make sure Trusted is highlited then click add, and add the ip addresses of the two computers that will be connecting thru your main system. These will most likely be in the 192.168.0.X range ( and i would assume that X is going to follow in sequence right after the main computer ( gateway ) you can each IP address with only a space between them, or you can add them seperately it doesnt matter . This should allow all ports and protocals that your sharing software allow to pass between the computers and the firewall will still keep the internet side secure.

As this is a long run on sentence and i havent slept yet... if any of this doesnt make sence just post what i missed and ill try to help you thru it
