This is probably one of the most powerful articles I've ever read.

Note: This is very lengthy.

And very true.

Posted by: redwench

ok, what did i miss? who is the mysterious entity in power that manages to control ALL media except PBS and the federal government? Ross Perot?

Posted by: Chako

I have watched American media..and truthfully, since Sept 11th, I must shake my head at all the stuff that is being glossed over like it means nothing.

So yes, I fully agree with this guy. His views are parallelled by what I see on CNN and other like news coverage conglomerates from the US.

You can disagree. Be my guest.

Posted by: redwench

what? you agree that the television media is kissing the us govts ass? of course they are. they always do. or almost always. youd have to go to print media to get a more balanced view.

so you fully agree with him that some mysterious power (other than the citizens of the us) is ruling both the us govt and all media?

Mysterious power?

Rereads the article...and just where do you get this mysterious power theory?

Posted by: laborat

perhaps if we could compile a list of suspects who have enough power to control the press...

1. They/Them
2. Public indifference/The Media
3. Jews/Nazis
4. (insert Country here)
5. council of 100/United Nations
6. Templars/Masons
7. Aliens/Time Travelers
8. Catholics/Christian Right/Muslims
9. H. Ross Perot
10. Texans
11. Elvis/Microsoft/OTS
12. Oil, Drug, Food Cartels
13. International Bankers
14. the Mafia/the Tong/Ninjas
15. secret govt. agencies/ultrasecret govt. agencies

did i leave any out?

The implications of this article, quite frankly, scare me.
Just call me paranoid, I guess.

Corperate America Fatcats are part of the problem if not most of it

as i said, unless i missed something, the article repeatedly mentions some "power" that controls the media (all forms yet, quite a trick) and the us govt. never mentions specifically what group or individual is this "power".
only thing im aware of that controls the media to a large extent is the consumer. and for whatever reasons, most consumers havent taken well to anything negative about the govt lately, so the media has had to cool it.

wench is exactly 100% correct.

I think the point of the article (as I understood it anyway) is that the corporate-controlled media and the corporate-lobbied gov't have started to share common interests. Therefore, it isn't profitable for the media to report unbiased stories on gov't policies. When media, gov't, and big business all have thier fingers in the consumers' pockets, keeping us complacent and "happy" is the best way for them to profit.

Posted by: Chako

So the media cools it for the benefit of who?

I thought it was your right to be advised of all the issues so that YOU can make an intelligent,
and conscientious decision. How is that possibly when you don't know squat, or worse, are not
told because it isn't politically expedient to do so?

So what your telling me is that it is ok for American news to not tell its people what is really
going on, to gloss over issues that others feel you should not know?

So where is the accountability to that? Where is the professionalism? Where does it end?

I know Justinious has hit it on the nail head. I would say he is 100% correct.

I find your explanation skewed Red.

i didnt say it was right to not print the other side. but most media survive based on either ratings or sales. if the american public metaphorically lynches media outlets that present both sides, they lose money. so the media backs down. they do this for many issues, not just as obviously. when was the last time you heard/read a pro-legalization of drugs piece?
its not because some "power" wants them to agree with the us government. its because they dont want to lose thier audience and therefore money.
media is a business in this country. so they avoid doing things that can lose them money. but its no mystery group, its supply and demand.

Labo, you forgot Teamsters, Greenpeace, and those annoying chicken bones.

The Illuminati... or.. more likely...

AOL-TimeWarner.

But seriously, though, I agree with Chako. When so many form of media outlets are controlled by a very, very few large corporations, and those large corporations are heavily involved in government lobbying... you have a conflict of interest as to reporting truthful news. The media stragically reports things to keep consumers on the proper track to keep the government happy to keep the media moguls in business. I'm not saying it hasn't always been like that.. I'm just saying.. choose your news sources wisely.

I like to joke that I get my news from the military networks and from the Daily Show on Comedy Central, and that the truth is somewhere in between.. but actually, I read the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, CNN.com, Yahoo News, Working For Change, and the BBC in addition to a few foreign papers that I read on occasion. I'm not kidding, I actually do read all of those almost every night.

I think the phrase "media informs consumers" is interesting.. "consumers" of data, information, Tommy Hilfiger clothing and Brittney Spears videos, rather than thinking, reasoning human beings. Which, unfortunately, seems more and more true, the more people I meet and speak with about anything other than the weather.

Posted by: redwench

hehe. yup. my main source of news nowadays is the bbc.

Hmm...why were Leno and Letterman told not to tell any more political jokes based on Bush's or his staff's actions? I'll be heavily disappointed if they stop.
