Diablo II/LOD MPQ error

I've been trying to install Diablo II and LOD for the last 3 days. I can get D2 to install just fine, and LOD installs just fine, until it gets to the MPQ checker, and then it'll pop up with the error message that I have a bad data file and that I need to uninstall and reinstall. I did everything Blizzard tech support told me (Thorough scandisk and defrag, Sync data transfer between my CD drive and HD, ect). Nothing seems to work. I even tried installing the 1.09 patch, and when I did that I got the error message that the patch couldn't identify it as an archive.
My system specs :
Processor : Pentium III 860MHz (L1 cache: 32.0 Kb, L2 cache: 256.0 Kb)
OS : Win98SE (with all critical updates and patches)
Memory : 512 Mb (523 768 Kb)
CD ROM : YAMAHA CRW8424E
Video Card : 3D Blaster Savage4 (32.0 Mb): 1024 x 768 - True Color (32 bit)
Sound Card : Monster Sound II
Hard Drive : two partitions, C: 4gb (Windows partition only), D: 25gb .. I'm installing on partition D

I've run into the same problem here.
I keep backups of the mpq files now.
I *think* it has to do with the CD/DVD player, as it doesn't happen on my other system. Then again it could be a driver problem as well.
I haven't dug too deep on this one since I just installed to the other system, then copied the files over (then reinstalled with the other copy to get the right cd keys )
You could try copying the .mpq files over from the CD's to see if that will fix the problem, but I think it's iin the .mpq file that the install creates.
hmmmm... you know, I just noticed... you have 512 meg, and so does my system that has the same problem. The *other* system only has 384.... why not try yanking 1 memory module and doing a reinstall?
(Death Rally (old game) used to complain if you had 64+ meg saying "you must have 8 meg or more mem to install) problem with the installer.
(just like old progs had a compression problem where if they started in the first 64k of address space they would hork.)
yeah, try yanking some mem and doing another install.

I have 512 MB in my system and don't get this error, so it shouldn't be that.
During installing I did get an insert play disc error, which I solved by first copying over all the MPQ files from D2 and LoD, then installing. The installer checks if the files are present and if not will copy them over, but won't overwrite them.
Make sure when you manually copy them over that their attributes are set to archive, not read only, or you won't be able to patch.

I have 2 copies of the entire diablo2 suite... one installs just fine, the other, well... doesn't. I get the mpq error, and its quite annoying. I also have 3 computers. Go figure. None of them can install the disk that gives me the mpq error. its, annoying as all get out. So, all this "its the CD" or "drivers" or "memory" is not true. It is the CD itself. I'm not sure how, b/c the CD i have the problem with doesn't appear to have any major flaws, and I've cleaned it more than once. So, I'm just guessing that one little shred of information on the CD got messed up and now doesn't work. FYI, i was at one point able to install with that CD but can't now. Humf. O well.

And the CD isn't scratched or anything? Sounds likea bug in SecuRom2.

its a common problem, and that is one of the solutions that blizzard suggests.
