Changing similar CPUS

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: GeForce_4_

I have an Intel Pentium 1 socket 7 133Mhz CPU
On my board there is a 66Mhz that when on turbo is at 100mhz

So I changed the cpus the 133 fits but nothing happens when I start it

Çould it be that theboard is at the maximum?

When I put the 66 in the computer that had the 133
it does nothing too...

so I put their original CPU's back.

I have a 90MHz too that is pretty old I was wondering if I just bought the same motherboard and the same CPU brand new from someone who never use it
same cpu and put it in.. will it work better?

Because it goes well / 128MB RAM / 90MHZ 100MHz buS/ 2mb Cirrus Logic

HEHE!

C YA ALL!

That's some pretty old hardware you got there. I don't think anyone will be able to tell you much without knowing what kind fo motherboards you're dealing with.

I am dealing with an amercian megatrends BIOS
with an Intel Marl Motherboard

And an Intel i430FX with an Award Modular BIOS

The MARL only take 75-166 MHz

And from what I've seen (I could be wrong) the i430FX ONLY takes 60 and 66 MHz.

hmmm on the MARL i am using a 133
and onthe Intel i430FX i also have a 90Mhz on one
so I wouldn't think so but keep trying maybe your on the right track

Right, so you're trying to put a 66Mhz into a board that has a minimum of 75. And I doubt that 430 board will take the 133. What more information did you need?

Those are great CPU's. You can get a 1.7ghz Celeron(P4 based) for under $100. The only difference between the celerons and the P4's are the L2 cache. The P4 has a 256kL2 cache while the Celerons have a 128kL2 cache. It is still a great buy and a great bang for your buck.

Thx but my biggest concern is that when i feel like switching to AMD or an actual Pentium what happens?
Is the whole MOBO no good for other than Celeron II (p4 based)

Posted by: Finster

Well, if you went with a Celeron, then you definitely will need a new mobo for any AMD. I'm not sure about going to P4 from celeron. I'm sure someone here will know more about that.

Posted by: Bobaroo

I am not sure on this one, Celerons are Socket 370, while the P4 are Socket 478(i think)

If they make the Celerons in a Socket 478(or whateve the P4 Socket is) then you can interchange the CPU's.

If you have a lot of money that you want to spend get a P4, but I think the Celeron is a better choice, and $300 cheaper.

Ì was thinking maybe using a slot one.
And I am not talking about the celeron based on P2
I mean the p4.

And also name me some AMD mobos THX!

Posted by: Bobaroo

Are you going to make a new computer?

Do not get a Slot processor, they are older and are hard to find.

Some good mobo companies are...
Epox
Abit
Asus
Gigabyte

And I was just checking the new 1.7ghz Celeron(P4 based) and it is a socket 478, just like the P4's, so I take it they can be inter changed

thx bob,
though I thought the slot processors were better but thx for telling me.

And for the AMD I would probably take from 1st Mainboard (AZ-II or higher )

They are pretty higher in extension ( 1.5 GB of ram , 3GHZ of compatibility I dont know about the sockets....
I think that the AMD XP is Socket A?

And yes I am building myself a comp.
My most biggest concerns are :Processor , RAM, Hard drive , video card , mobo.

I can get an old floppy drive , soundblaster 32 and a not too bad network card until i get a little bit more money

I am only 12

so if I could get atleast 350$

Id try getting a pretty good case with power supply mobo, video card cheap sound card AMD Athlon XP and a 1stmainboard , floppy , Hard drive of about 8 to 10 Gegs I would be happy

The cdrom can wait

Ill just install windows from a hard drive and collect more money to then buy a better video card a better sound card and a network card probably a cd rom
and ill be ok

Also here is in detail what kind of setup I really want : <

AMD Athlon XP 1.2 Ghz minimum
128 of ram (to start off)
Win 98 SE
ATI all in wonder 16MB (until i get more money but its good enough since the cpu will help lots.)
probably will either get a Geforce 4 64 mb
ATI Radeon 7500 or 8500 I really like ATI.
Also I would get a 48 to 52X cd-rom
any floppy drive as long as it works well
a D-Link or SMC network card
Keyboard and mouse won't be hard...
Speakers too.
Also a pretty good casing where room isn't a problem when playing in it or expanding....

I would atleast get 256mb of DDR Ram. You can get a GeForce4 Ti4200 64mb for about $170.

The AMD XP processor is Socket A, And you can get a AMD XP 1600+, which is 1.4ghz and $90.

As for cases This Antec case is pretty good, it is roomy and stays cool.
