Rangers

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Okay, I have a level 65 Ranger with the two best crossbows in the game and I can't kill squat. Anyone know if it's possible to make a Ranger that can actually kill something quickly? Should I be using a big damage bow instead of a crossbow? Or should I give up on being a pure Ranger and add some melee. Thanks for any input.

Can I see what crossbows you're using?

Right now I'm a level 63 "Master Sharpshooter" (with level 20ish nature magic) and I'm doing ok. I can kill stuff in Grescal in Veteran mode just fine. I use a crossbow too because you can run and shoot with it.

Oh, but I'm playing on Easy difficulty... I gave up on playing Normal because you don't get anything for playing on normal difficulty.

Anytime uh...ok. I'm Dadster on the Zone. Or ICQ me at 6702028. If you do it in the next 10 or some minutes I'm doing a chicken run.

Yeah the lack of bow and crossbow damage has been a complaint among a lot of people. The best way to make up for it is to try and focus on any items that improve Pierce % or add piercing damage. That adder is pretty useful on crossbows since they have a fast rate of attack.

Warriors up front, absorbing the damage, rangers in the middle, providing fire support, and mages behind, casting mucho damage spells.
Its this way in many games. Rangers aren't going to be "Damge Dealers" or "Soloers".

Yea Lon, very good point. I have a bow that does pierce damage now and it's pretty damn cool. I can do about 300 damage per hit at least once or twice on a target.

Darky, I'm soloing in Elite Mode right now with a ranger.

I never said it was impossible.
Even still, Soloing as a ranger, in elite, with 8 people, and no mods, just isn't going to happen.
Yet, you can put a warrior in the same circumstances, and he can solo.

Rangers don't dish out enough damage to solo, pure and simple.

Really if you think about it, no single class character is a viable option to solo. Sure you can tank well with a warrior, but it's going to be slow going unless you pick up Triple strike.

Same applies to Rangers. All of my Archer characters have an equal level in a magic school. Works out pretty well for me.

Well, what I ended up doing was getting her enough nature magic for Major Heal, and enough combat magic for Triple Strike, I then raised her melee skill to 50 (from 16-50 in one vet game with three people) and now I go archer from a distance but when they get close I switch to melee and Triple Strike and stomp them that way. Seems to work well. Eventually I am going to raise nature magic high enough to get the ranger enhancement spells and see how that helps.

BTW my ranger was pure level 66 when I started raising melee skill. You know I went to level 50 in melee without strength moving up a half level. That's a little silly I think.

PS There is absolutely no way to solo a pure ranger throughout the game at level 66 with no mods.

I hear ya, even on the lower end its bad. 2 days ago, still in single player, my level 35 pure melee started working on ranged w/ grenade launcher and went from 0 to 38 with only 3 raises in dex.

Well mine isn't a pure ranger either. He's got level 30ish NM.

I should get CM up for TripleStrike... that'd look cool with my lightsabre.

Actually without my lightsabre and with a weapon that maxes at 120 damage, I do the same amount of damage as my bow, which has a max damage of 261 right now.

Okay, let me explain this better. My character has a fast axe that does 166-211 damage and a fast crossbow that does 187-248 damage. Now this very same character can kill a monster about twenty times faster with the axe than the crossbow, and this when his melee was level 25 and his range was level 66. Explain that one.

Ranger based, so that dex was the strong attribute over str right? Wierd.

I was gonna work on raising dex/ranged but now I'm not so sure.

Posted by: Tarkus

Yeah dext is much higher than strength.

The best way they could balance Archers out would be to allow Dexterity to add damage to bows. That way there is an advantage for being a pure archer over a multiclaseed one. Even something as little as 1 point of damage per dex would be an improvement.

Or they could just let the bow do the damage it's supposed to do and not have a 248 damage bow reduce HP by 5 with each hit.

LOL Tark very good point.

And then raise the bow damage, seeing that all the other attack forms go up to 400-700.

Of course it makes no sense for a bow to do as much damage as a melee weapon because of the ranged advantage... but still, the difference right now is kind of ridiculous.

Triple Strike should be allowed to work on bows as well. Actually I see some multishot mods out there... maybe...

There's one of those combat magic spells that would have been cool if it worked on bows. It's the one that causes a monster you kill to explode and cause damage. I can't remember for sure but I think it only works with a melee weapon.

Death Blast , a combat spell?

Posted by: Ion Silverbolt

Yeah I tried it. Useless.
