Booting issues

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

450P2 w/MS6119 v1.1 Bx2, 192MB PC133 RAM, WD 40GB HD, voodoo3 2000, USrobotics 56k Modem.

When booting I get an issues where it locks up while detecting my HD which is on the primary master IDE. If i disconnect the HD it tells me to insert the system disk, then when i insert a system disk it gives me an error saying "Disk I/O error"

Can someone please tell me how to correct this? thanks

There may be a jumper set wrong on the mother board. Check your jumper settings. Check back for more input on this.

*Also you could try going into the BIOS and redetecting the HD, there is usually an option "Autodetect hard disk".

*What OS are you running?

Im trying to run windows 98

See if you can get some BIOS updates. Your BIOS may not be reading the 40Gb drive correctly.

the original BIOS is vers 1.1, i updated to 2.1 which states that it will support hard drives greater than 65GB... still doesnt work, still does the exact same thing.

Check the jumper - should be set to Master

Check that IDE cable is also correctly aligned on I/O controller card port

Check in BIOS - is the hard drive detected correctly with correct parameters.

Manually re-enter the hard drive specs

Check cables for floppy drive - you may have inadvertently knocked something loose

Just a check list to eliminate the possible.

* If no help there than you could try this:

Boot the system with a floppy "boot disk", such as a "Windows Startup Disk". The startup disk can be created on another system and used to boot your system up. After a successful boot from the floppy disk you should be able to access your "c:\" drive and verify that the hard disk is still functioning by doing a "dir" command at the c:\ prompt. Upon confirming that your Hard Drive is still functional, you could put the file named sys.com on your floppy boot disk and then put the missing system files back on your hard disk to make it capable of booting on its own.

It's important that your floppy boot disk is using the same kind of system files that your hard drive had been using or this won't work cleanly. If in doubt you may do the following. Use any floppy "boot" disk available to successfully boot your system. Check the hard drive by changing to a "c:\" prompt and trying a "dir" command. Find the "sys.com" file on your hard drive by entering: c:\dir sys.com /s. Usually this file will be found in the c:\windows\command directory (if you're using Win95/98. Copy that file to your floppy disk. Next, while in the c:\windows\command directory, do the following: sys a: (enter). This will transfer your current system files to the floppy disk. Change back to a plain "c:\" prompt by entering "cd..." until you see only "c:\>".

At this point change back to your floppy drive ("a:\") and do: sys c:\ (enter). Your system file will be put back on your hard drive and you will see "system transferred". Remove the floppy disk and reboot your system. You should be able to access your hard drive at this time.

Keep us posted.

the HD is set to master, the IDE cable is properly inserted, the cables are all snug, i havent tried manually entering in the hard drive specs. One thing though, for some reason when i go to the AUTO DETECT for the IDE HD in the BIOS, it freezes up on that too.

Either the drive or controller is dying or you have a bad cable connection. Try it alone on the second IDE controller.

*It could be a system board issue.

Good news guys, it's up and running, I'm writing this response with it, I figured out 2 out of 3 of the IDE cables i had were JUNK! So right now I have my HD as Master Primary and my CD-ROM as Slave Primary. Thx for all the help guys, i appreciate it! Thanks!!!!
