Windows 98 Hard Drive Size Limitation?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Does anyone know what the limit is on hard drive size for Win98SE? Or is it a function of the M/B bios? I want to install an 80 Gigger and want to make sure that it does not get partitioned into several chunks.

I never heard of a size limitation for Windows 98se. I thought the size limitation was the max size for FAT32.

That depends on the BIOS version of your motherboard.

You can get more information from KB Article Q154997.

Of interest:

Although the FAT32 file system supports hard disks up to 2 terabytes in size, some hard disks may not be able to contain bootable partitions that are larger than 7.8 GB because of limitations in your computer's basic input/output system (BIOS) INT13 interface. Please contact your hardware manufacturer to determine if your computer's BIOS supports the updated INT13 extensions.

This limit is only for the first (primary) partition.

You won't be able to create partitions larger than 2 GB with the FAT16 file system.

Isn't there a formula to calculate the maximum partition size for a FAT32 volume?
