Can a bad video card cause a monitor to blow?
Posted by: Heathen
Erm.. I don't think so. Normally it screws up the motherboard (AGP or PCI slot) but I've never heard of a bad video card blowing a monitor...
.... still anythings posible

If it's an old monitor and you'd use the bad video card for a long time (hours?), then maybe it's possible.
If you only tried the video card for a few minutes, or if you used it for a long time but with the screen looking normal then I don't think it would do the monitor any harm.

Thanks, here's another question for you. How 'bout the other way around? Can a bad monitor blow the card? Both the monitor and the card are 3 yrs old and in a matter of minutes it went from fine to programs freezing and after a cold boot there was no post but the monitor light was green then a static sound and then dead!

I guess it could.
Did you try another monitor or video card?
I think the monitor is broken, video cards usually don't make static sounds when they die.

It's electrically possible for either to blow the other component if the safety circuits are ineffective.

Thanks everyone for your input. I replaced the monitor and it has been working fine for about 4 days now. I guess the card is fine. Now comes the problem of disposing of the old monitor. Thanks again for all your help.
