Win XP Home Network Problem
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have two computers both running XP connected to a Siemens Speedstream 2602 Router which is connected to my DSL modem. They can both access the internet with no problem but they are having trouble seeing each other on the network and I cannot do any file or printer sharing.
They both have TCP/IP and File and Printer Sharing installed and enabled; they are both members of the same workgroup; they have unique computer names; all physical connections seem ok.
I can see both computers from the first computer but cannot access the second computer. The second computer can only see itself in the workgroup.
Any help would be much appreciated. TIA.

Try this:
Troubleshooting Home Networking in Windows XP (Q308007)
If that doesn't help, post back.

Thanks. I'm checking out the information from that link right now.
My network guy at work who handles NT, but not XP says it sounds like DHCP is not enabled on the second computer. He wasn't sure how to do that or check for it in XP though.

To turn DHCP on in WinXP, you need to tell the TCP/IP protocal to "Obtain an IP address automatically"
It should be on the first page under the "General" tab.
You can find this by going to the control panel. You'll want to select your "Network Connections" icon. Where this is will depend on whether you have "Category" or "Classic" view turned on.
If you are using, or switch to "Classic" view, select your "Network Connections" icon, then select your "Local Area Connection" icon.
This should bring up a applet showing you what adapter is being used and what protocals are available to said adapter.
Select your TCP/IP protocal and click on "Properties", this will bring up the "General" tab I mentioned earlier.
If "Obtain an IP address automatically" is already selected, then there is probably another problem.
Good luck.

The network connections wizard automatically activates Xp's firewall when you create a new connection. All I had to do was uncheck the firewall box for my lan connection and everything ran smoothly!
Thanks for your help Kdr Kane and Sarc.
