Access my pc from the internet

I travel a lot and have seen people in the past who could access their home computer from the internet by typing in their ip address. I would love to be able to do this, but have no idea how. Could anyone tell me what program I need, or how to do it? I have an always on cable connection.

If your computer is set up for it and you know your IP address, you could also use a telnet session.
