I've been having a problem with "This Program Has Performed An Illegal Function and Will Be Shut Down" waaaaay too often, sometimes in excess of 10-12 times per day. Sometimes this happens as bootup completes, or when I change from one user to another (change profile?) There are many other times, there seems to be no real pattern. It's infuriating. I have IE 5.5, Win 98 SE Thanx for any help. Lawrence junobear1@yahoo.com

Which program is giving you this error message? Next time it happens, look at the top of the error message box and let us know which program is causing the problem.

That type of error can be caused by manay things. Anything from corrupted OS files, to bad memory. First thing I would do is shut down all extra programs by hitting CTRL+ALT+DEL. Only leave systray, explorer, and any driver you may have for your keyboard and mouse. Then, run a complete scandisk and defrag.
Before then, you might want to check your memory out to make sure it's ok. There's a utility in our downloads section called Goldmemory that will test your RAM out. It will tell you if your RAM is ok.
There are lots of other causes that can contribute to these types of errors including viruses and even a failing hard drive. Overclocking and heat can even play a factor. Try the above and see if that helps you and post back.

Win9x does tend to get corrupted over time. First I would try cleaning up your startup programs. If you click on start and go to run type in msconfig and hit enter. Under the startup tab you can see what programs are loaded up bootup. You can uncheck anything that you feel you don't need. Next do as Ion suggested and try running scandisk then defrag and see if that helps.
What I've found in the past is that usually when you start having those types of errors frequently the easiet thing to do is back your data up then wipe and reload Windows and all your applications and games.

I've run thorough Scandisk (it said it found many errors & fixed them all) Ran Diskeeper defrag program. Will run Goldmemory as soon as they credit my plastic payment.
It's too soon to tell if that helped anything. "I shall return"
