Editing Movies

I'll describe to you guys what I need to be able to do, and if you can, tell me what the best program to buy or download is.
I am putting together a bunch of clips from music videos, movies, news articles, and then adding words to them. So I can make one big movie out of these things. Also, I am going to need to mute all the sounds from these clips and insert another .mp3 or .wav file. So what kind of movie editor is there out there and what is the best?
Also I am going to need a good .wav editor or (an .mp3 editor if one exisits), that can allow me to copy a file from part of the same song and paste it into another part. So what is a good .wav editor for this?
Thanks for your support as always.

Virtual Dub for the movie editing. It can crop images, add images, edit the sounds, and basically everything you explained you needed.
For a sound editor you would need to decompress the MP3 file to a wav before editing it. I use the program that came with my sound card (SBLive! x-Gamer, program is creative wave studio) for this, but do't know if you would have it. I don't really know of any free wav editors beside sndrec32, which is very tedious and annoying for sound editing.

Adobe Premiere is nice, but it comes with a hefty price tag And it doesn't like mp3's
Virtual Dub is nice and so is Nandub. They are basicilly the same program, one is better, but i cann't remember which

Hey, i downloaded both nandub and virtual dub, they both look the same soo far. But i'm trying to import this .mpg video into it, but whenever i try i get the error message: "MPEG Import Filter: Unexpected end of file". Im about to look at their site for help, but help from other video dub users would be great.

I don't think Nandub directly supports MPEG's, however, you can open and edit them this way:
Start DVD2AVI, open the MPEG file (put the filter in the open dialog on "All Files (*.*)", or it won't show the MPEG's).
Goto the audio menu and set "Track Number" on None.
Now goto the file menu and select "Save Project" (NOT Save AVI), it should be done pretty quickly.
Exit DVD2AVI and goto the VFAPI\Codec dir and run vifpset.bat, you only need to do this once.
Goto the VFAPI\Reader dir and start VFAPI. press the "Add Job" button and open the .D2V file you just made with DVD2AVI. Now press the Start button and a few seconds later, you got a file that Nandub can handle.
Don't move/rename/delete the original MPEG file, it still uses it, the .D2V and .AVI file you just made don't work without it.
Here's DVD2AVI...

I found a much easier way to get around the "Unexpected end of file" error message.
Download VCDgear (www.vcdgear.com). Run the program, set Extraction / Conversion to mpeg -> mpeg and check the box Fix MPEG Errors. Click Load and a new window will open where you can select your mpeg file. Click OK and another window will prompt you for the file location and name you want to use for the new file. click start and you will have a new file that should be error free!
later....
