Converting VHS tapes to VCD or DivX
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Alright, I got a ton of old VHS tapes just gathering dust at my apartment, and I don't have a TV or a VCR inside my room so I can only watch them in the living room.
BUT, I really like to watch them on my computer, and I don't want to re-buy all of them in DVD format to be able to do so. So I was planning on converting them to a format that my computer can read - which is either VCD or DivX.
Since I haven't converted VHS to any digital format before, I was wondering what I needed to be able to do this.
What hardware?
What software?
What procedures? (links would be good)
Thanks in advance

would probably be easier to just download them off the net.

Well, I tried, but most of what I want could not be found on the net (old Cheers episodes, Wonder Years, Battlestar Galactica, even some Quantum Leap episodes).
I got most of em on VHS ... I just wanna convert them to something I can watch on my monitor

I've done this, but only on Macs in a video-editing lab..

You need some kind of capture card to get the taped material in your pc. Those things are expensive, I'd try to find someone that has one and borrow it.
You need a soundcard too for the audio (duh), and not a $10 POS, cuz that'll desynch the audio for sure.
The capture card usually comes with software to create .mpg or .avi files.
When you have the movie on your hd, convert it to (S)VCD or divx. I'd use divx if I were you, divx looks about the same as SVCD for half the disk space.
www.doom9.net has some good tutorials to convert files to divx/vcd/svcd.

You'll need either a TV Tuner (~$70+) or a video card with VIVO (~$200+) or a DVI Capture card ($???).
MY TV Tuner gets some static in the image, but when I encoded it with DivX it was hardly noticable, an ATI TV Wonder. I'm wondering if one of the external USB tuners would be able to avoid this.
I also recommend www.doom9.org for learning.

Thanks guys ... I think I have a TV Tuner lying around somewhere ... a Hauppauge, if I remember correctly .... I'll see if I can install it and set up my VCR for a test recording. Thanks again...

If you don't feel like spending hours to learn how to properly make divx movies, I can do it too. My divx skillz are getting better and better

ATI all in wonder (latest version) does a decent job of capturing.
A lot of newer cards do have ViVo capability as more ppl are asking for it.
If your old hauppage card doesn't do the trick, do a bit of searching before getting a new card.
you'll want to capture at least at 640x480@30 fps.
You'll need a ton of hd space, a fair chunk of mem, and a quick hd/cpu.
again, the all-in-wonder radeon should fill the bill. (for windows)

His comp is more than capable of capturing TV signals.
