The Curious Case of the Cable Kidnapping

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

(Pardon me while I pose in the nude one more time for T'Kron's Travel Pics)

I got a call not necessarily mysterious but from T'Kron and we all know what that means. He was on his way back from the OTS party in Cali forny and wanted to stop and show me pics and tell me stories. Well one thing led to another and the topic came up about how my LAN party favor computer (put together from last years party was doing). Its okay btw and wargy even asked if It had blown yet but no, everythings fine. I put a Dell decal on it, just to show Im cool when My nephew comes over.

Like most of us, T'kron, (god bless him) wanted to see how the system was running and help out the computer challenged labo. I watched as he sat back to tweak my computer by running DSLreports.com/tools <---- no dirty thoughts about tools here. anyways he tweaked my connection and got me going pretty fast. not enough to get a ticket but faster than my old cable speed increasing downloads by 50 percent. one thing led to another and he went into Startup to get rid of all this stuff (I dont know where it all came from but I suspect whats his name put it on there) off of my bootup startup if that makes sense. we rebooted and lo and behold.. we booted explorer and NO PAGE FOUND.
!!!!!!

Since drama is the part of geeks getting together especially when labo and the T'kron get together. This ended up high drama, especially when I told my sister down stairs We were going to have to shut down her connection. Everyone say MOO while I let T'kron write about the real problem.. Its all rocket science to me anyways...

Here's T'kron....

First of all I ran msconfig and unchecked the folllowing:
Adaware bootup
ConMgr.exe (left over from dialup earthlink)
TkBell.exe (thinks it was another dialup ISP)
Earthlink setup (from old ISP)
Taskmonitor
CreateCD
Zonealarm
Watch
Rodger Wilco
Quick Shelf 1994
Microsoft Office
To make a long story short, we where unable to get to any internet site until we reinabled zonealarm (shutting it down manually after the Windows ME started)
Go figure.

Well at least he now has 94% resources available when he first boots up his computer (was at 70% before the tweaks)

Back to Labo...

To make a short story even longer, I have to say that first of all we found ourselves on the 24 hour hotline for Charter Cable service, (on sunday no less!!!!)and actually made it up to a level II Tech Rep. Since Im watching HGTV BBQ2000 while this was happening I didn't really understand what was happening but T'kron dropped the phone at least twice and started mumbling stuff about IPconfig and stuff like that you put on the Run line. (stuff i dont even think about)

I have a Linksys router and a Linksys hub to go with my cable modem and we couldnt for the life of us figure out why Explorer wouldnt run. But what happen was that ZoneAlarm for some reason doesnt like Cable. We have no explanation as to why and we are just posting this to see if anyone else had probs with ZoneAlarm and Cable Connect. T'kron leaves tomorrow for Chicago and I am worried that if something happens again, Im screwed. one of those Dude your getting a Dell type moments.

T'kron says not to worry he makes house calls. I havent told him Im selling the house.

I don't know half as much as T'kron, but I'll give it a try:

Try uninstalling Zone Alarm and installing another firewall altogether. (Like Tiny Personal Firewall)
Or, you could go without once since most routers have built-in firewalls.

Also make sure the router is set up correctly (assigns correct IP to computer) and make sure your computer is set to Obtain IP address automatically. Make sure you have no IP under "Gateway" .....i'm assuming the router supports DHCP here....

Hmmm

In Internet Explorer, go to Tools--->Internet Options-->Connections--> LAN Settings and try putting in your router IP as proxy server.

One thing I can tell you from Experience with ZoneAlarm - Dont disable it in MSCONFIG, use the options in ZA itself to disable it. Especially true Vector. I was without internet for 24 hours last year because of ZoneAlarm. I had unchecked boxes in MSConfig related to it, such as true vector and a few other things. I fixed it after rechecking them and then disabling them with the options menu in the program.

Explain the cable connection. What modem type is it?

Does the ISP use a DHCP - ask you to Obtain an IP address automaticly?

Does the system aquire an IP address?
If it does, ping something by IP address. If that works ping something by url - like www.cnet.com

If you can ping by IP and not URL- Zone Alarm has marked the cable companies DNS servers as hostile and ignored them. Thus no look up. Page not found.

Uninstall Zone alarm. Disabling does nothing.

Depending on how the Cable company has your connection set up, you should see the result with the ping again by URL

Consider removing everything from the network properties and redoing it with only what you need to use the cable connection. A client and TCP/IP.

Skyn has some solid advice there. Whenever possible, you should always disable soemthing on loadup through the programs options. Especially in the case of Zone Alarm. MSConfig should only be used whenever other means of disabling a program on startup are not possible.
