Whole System Lockup, Need Help
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have been having several computer freezes lately on my computer. They freeze and leave no error message at all and I cannot use Ctrl+Alt+Delete to close the program. I did however, after reading a Windows XP book, that Windows keeps an error log, so I checked it out and found these error messages.
Hanging application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2600.0, hang module mshtml.dll, version 6.0.2716.2200, hang address 0x000c90a1.
Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2600.0, faulting module explorer.exe, version 6.0.2600.0, fault address 0x00008366
An error occurred while the wizard was checking the current Windows product license. Error Code: 0x80040507
Those are the error messages. If anyone can help out please because it is getting to be a bother to click on a webpage and your whole system locks up.
My system specs are as follows: Windows XP Home Edition, GeForce3 Ti 2000 Nividia Video Card, Master Riptide Sound System, 384MB RAM, 500MHZ Pentium3 Processor.
Thank you for your time and any help you can offer me will be greatly welcomed. Thanks again and have a great day.

Read this it may help.
If Internet Explorer (IE) 6 is slowing to a crawl and/or hanging and starts to use 100 percent of CPU time it may well be a corruption of the "Temporary Internet Files folder". In particular, trying to delete Temporary Internet files via Tools, Internet Options or other privacy software seems to trigger this behavior. Also, attempts to view files in the Temporary Internet Files folder may show the folder as already empty when it is not. This behavior occurs because the Temporary Internet files database is corrupt.
The Temporary Internet files aren't really files but entries in %systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat. Deleting that file solves the problem. This same problem has occured for NT users and the fix works for XP.
1. Open a command prompt window on the desktop (Start/Run/command).
2. Exit IE and Windows Explorer (iexplore.exe and explorer.exe, respectively, in Task Manager, i.e - Ctrl-Alt-Del/Task Manager/Processes/End Process for each).
3. Use the following command exactly from your command prompt window to delete the corrupt file:
C:\>del "%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat"
4. Restart Windows Explorer with Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del/Task Manager/Applications/New Task/Browse/C:\Windows\explorer.exe[or your path]) or Shutdown/Restart the computer from Task Manager.
IE should now work properly.
Post back and let us know how you make out.
Also Welcome to OTS!

I don't seem to have a %systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat. file on my computer. I did exactly what you told me to do and it just said that C:\> del is not a valid command or something like that. Could it be that I don't have this file?

This might help with the errors your getting. This seems to cover what problems your having.

seijin, did you just cut and paste that line?

For Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat
%username% would be your logon name.

And the Local Settings folder is hidden.

How do I find this folder, because my computer does not recognize it at all. I put my username in and it still says it is "unavailiable". Is there someway I can find this folder?

I assume you have show all files enabled?

How can I make sure all my files are showing, how do I enable that?

Open any folder
click on view
select folder options
click on the view tab
put a check in the box "show all files"
I usually also uncheck the box for "hide file extensions of know file types"
then click on apply
then ok and close the window

I finally found the Local and Settings Folder, I had to do some searching because it couldn't find the address I typed in. Now should I delete all the temp internet files or only some?

Never mind I seem to have the folder you are talking about. It was under administrator. Are you sure I can delete this with no problems to the computer, because I don't want to cause more problems than are happening right now.

YES, it's just been suggested to destroy your computer. Your computer will never ever boot up again and it will leap up and beat you to a pulp.
Sorry, humour overload. You can delete anything in the temporary internet files folder, it's just a directory full of all the pron sites you've visited.

I did everything you told me to do, I deleted that file and all the other Temporary internet files on my username and the other three members of my family's username.
I checked my RAM with GoldMemory has someone suggested and it found nothing wrong with my RAM, so now what should I do? The whole system lockup isn't near as bad as it has been, but it still happens.
Anymore suggestions?

do a cntl + alt + delete to get your task list and post it here.
or go to the following site to see what things you can eliminate from your startup:
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startu...tartup_full.htm
to edit your startup files go to
start
run
msconfig
then go to the startup tab, and uncheck the items that you do not need. you can always recheck them later on or many of the items you can run by gooing to start programs and starting hte item from there.
