From what I gather, the vacuum tubes produce a warmer, better sound. But why bother with AC97 audio?
This is more of a 'hmm' thing than anything else.

Guitar players insist that tube amplifiers are far superior in sound to transistors. It's one of their pet peeves.
Electronics audio manufacturers have been trying to convince them otherwise for the last 40 years. Since they can't, they have been trying to make electronic components simulate the 'tube' sound.

There is a lot... A-LOT... that goes into getting really good sound out of any sound system.
Whether it be computer audio, home stereo, car audio, or musical insturment amplification, it's not just whether it's tube or solid state. It gets into the quality of the source, speakers, equilization... and many other factors.
For me, when it comes to listening to mixed music, I think digital processing technology is the best balance for performance and cost. But when it comes to guitar amplification for instance, it's hard to beat the warmth and shear volume of a tube amplifier.
But sound quality is very subjective. Everyone's got different tastes. Hence the difference between a Marshall amp, and a Peavy.
Anyway, I'm not sure a tube amp system on a MOTHERBOARD (of all things) is very practical. It looks like they sacrificed about 3 PCI slots to stick that stuff on there.
