System Locks Up

I've seen this issue on several machines. They've all been HP Vectra VLi8 running Windows 2000 Professional. They have between 128-320MB RAM and over 5GB free on an 8GB HD. Pagefile is set at 750-1000. They are also running Novell client 4.81.

Here's what happens: If the user tries to browse the contents of a mapped drive, either through "My Computer" or "Windows Explorer" the system hangs. You will see in the status bar that there are, for example, 150 files however none of them display and you need to CTRL-ALT-DEL and End Task because Windows Explorer or My Computer stop responding. Also when you click Start, Control Panel, Printers the system hangs and will not display the list of installed printers. Another issue I've noticed on each machine is that when shutting down you get the "CSC Notification has stopped responding" and you have to click "end task" to get out of it.

The systems are fully updated with all current critical updates, Service Packs, security rollups, etc. Also the BIOS has been updated to the latest version.

I've done a little research and some have suggested that there is some conflict between a recent microsoft update and the novell client. I'd really like to figure out what is causing these problems and how to resolve them.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

You asked this question before.

Only in a slightly different way. You don't have the latest client software.

I didn't say it before, but you are in a bad position trying to run Windows 2000 clients over the IPX protocol. It's totally bad news and you are going to have continuous problems with it. Not to mention the performance issues.

Kdr Kane....are you suggesting that I should upgrade to the 4.83 client and install it with the "IP only (remove IPX if present)" option?

Sorry, no.

I'm saying that your organization should consider fully migrating to a Windows environment if you wish to optimally use Windows clients for performance reasons.

Meaning, get rid of the Netware servers and NDS if you can.

As for the 4.83 client, I am only going by Novell's recommendation. You should test it to see if it resolves your problems.
