Setting Up Router for D2 B.Net

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Has anyone had any sucess using an DSL modem sharing device like a LinkSys Etherfast Cable/DSL router and ever gotten connected to Battle.Net.

When I try to connect I hang at the "Connecting to fastest server" screen for a few moments and then get a message that it can't find my modem.

Tried everything I can think of to get 2 computers in my house to hook up to Battle.Net but have not been successful.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i havent used lynksys but i do use netgear version of that and if im not mistaken the lynksys is a bit harder to setup for sharing since i think it comes with a firewall u have to configure but im certain there is someone that reads these forums that has used one before.

Hmmmm, I'm using the Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL Router for my cable connection, and I have three computers hooked up to it. I haven't had any problems with it, and the setup "was" a bit more involved than a normal switch.

Are you sure you followed the all the instructions on the manual? It shouldn't be an issue with the firewall, since it will show you a different error message altogether (I've played on bnet without ay error messages and didn't really have to set up anything extra).

I assume you have used a dial-up connection prior to having that DSL modem. Make sure you have the Network Properties properly set up. Consult your manual on how to do this...

If you go to Bnet's support site, it has information on ports that need to be opened in your firewall. I think D2 needs ports 4000, &6112-6119 open. If you go in your router's documentation, it should tell you how to open the ports.

The problem is this. Battle.net uses UDP for talking to the computers. This is a connectionless protocol and hence there's no fixed connection from one machine to another. [Unlike Halflife where each computer can specify which port to use]

When attempting to connect to battle.net through a proxy server, router or what have you, usually what will happen is that the first user will be able to get in , but not the second.

On DSL with Wingate 4.4.1 I was able to get both users into Battle.net. However, for warcraft II I was unable to get them the join the same game w/o one of them being kicked out. Once kicked, that user could no longer join any games saying that the lag was too great.

On Cable with Wingate 4.4.1 I can get both users to join and play without any problems.

It seems as if the PPoE protocol interferes with Wingates operation and makes it so that only one machine gets the UDP packets, rather then both.

I tried again with Sygate and it's NAT methodology and got a bit further. With DSL I was now able to join the same game and actually start it, however there were now lost packets causing severe game lag.

I don't know of any solution to the problem.. and have my doubts that a route [like linksys] would help any as it's doing the same thing wingate and sygate are doing, but in hardware.

It would be interesting to see how a linux box as a gateway would handle the situation. I think that would be the only real solution to this problem.
