XBox Sales Fall in Japan, GameCube Sales Rise

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

The following is a list of sales of consoles in Japan last week from Planet XBox:

This week was quite significant as it was the first charts released covering GameCube price drops. As most expected, this resulted in a total turnaround as Xbox units went from 5,000+ units last week to 3,800 units while GameCube managed to surpass both Xbox and PSOne with 18,700 units respectively. As always, the full hardware figures are shown below.

PlayStation 2: 49,800 (Annual: 1,815,200)
Game Boy Advance: 29,500 (Annual: 1,253,500)
GameCube: 18,700 (Annual: 587,400)
PSOne: 4,500 (Annual: 127,300)
Xbox: 3,800 (Annual: 203,300)
Wonder Swan Color: 2,000 (Annual: 87,400)

I take it Japan doesn't like the XBox. More Playstation Ones were sold...

And MS is going to release Xbox Live in Japan

Heh, talk about brand-loyalty.....

That PSOne thing is some nifty stuff though. Even if it's not one of the next gen consoles, it's still nice to have. Very portable.

Slap the LCD accessory on there, and play on car trips.

Yeah, brand loyalty is huge in japan. It's probably the main obstacle that MS has to overcome over there. However, when sega starts releasing xbox exclusive games... that'll probably sell more than a few units in japan.

heck yeah!

i still dont understand the desire MS has to market tot he japanese as their main customer. they do have a lot of gamers there but they have a much larger hurdle to cross in all that import tarriffs and restrictions japan has. Japan isnt like the US in that we have a very liberal import/export policy comparaed to their very restrictive one. so it really doesnt surprise me when american products do not do well there

Gamecube and PS1 beating Xbox, I could reason with the PS2 but this is just too much. Things are looking rathe ugly for MS in Japan.

I dont know this for sure, but I dont think that MS is making Japan their main customer. I think they are simply putting the xbox out there to see how it does. They arent expecting it to be bigger than the PS2 or even the gamecube.

MS has said (and Nova has said it here) that they are not looking for the Xbox to be a huge sucess. They are trying to install a base of fans, so they can make money when their next system comes out.

The PS1 and PS2 are japaneese prodducts anyway, so you should expect their sales to be higher in the home Country.

That doesnt explain why the Dreamcast was a flop

Posted by: Xtren

I'd blame that on the failure to produce good game titles. The Dreamcast didn't come out with any great games nor with a large quantity of games. The release of the PS2 soon afterwords overshadowed the already underacheiving console.

*Smack!*

Good Dreamcast Games

My sugestion: Instead of buying 2 xbox games, go pick up a dreamcast and a few of the titles listed there.

It isnt Sega's fault that the Japanese gaming public doesn't like good games.

Dreamcast games blew PS2 away for gameplay.

I agree with AK. If you had $100 to spend, I would definatley pick a DC up over anything out on PS2, Xbox, or GC right now.

I wouldn't say it was the lack of quality games, but more of Japanese console buyers' disinterest in anything Sega and huge dedication to PSX when the Dreamcast came out.

I have to say that I have played the Dreamcast quite a few times actually and I did like some of the games. The graphics were also very good, almost as good as the PS2's which of course was great at the time it came out. Disinerest as you mentionned before was another big factor in the reason for which the console did not sell a lot.
