Every time I use Outlook Express to get my e-mail it starts up MSN Messenger. I want it left off until I want it on. I have already gone through the options and freferences in both programs with no success. Any ideas?

This tweak is used to remove MSN Instant Messenger functionality and integration from Outlook Express.
Open your registry and find the key below. You may need to create the key, if it does not already exist.
Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called 'Hide Messenger' and edit the value according to the settings below.
Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.
(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
Hide Messenger REG_DWORD 0x00000002 (2)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express
Registry Settings
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express]
Value Name: Hide Messenger
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (2 = remove messenger)
Reference
here
*Under Windows XP*
1) Run the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc)
2) Expand Administrative templates then Windows components
3) Option "do not allows windows messenger to be run" and "do not automatically start windows messenger initially" are the ones you want
These options can be set under both Computer Configuration and under User Configuration.

Tweaker,
I searched the Registry and could not find the line in question. It just wasn't there. I also used the Auto Search function as well. Is this for Windows 98?? Many thanks.

If the key is not there, you can create it yourself. It will still work.
Type regedit at the "run" line.
In the registry window, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express.
Once you're there, go to "edit" at the top of the screen. Then select "new" then "key."
Then just set the values to:
Value Name: Hide Messenger
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (2 = remove messenger)
Hope this helps!

I have XP-Pro running and I updated my Windows Messenger (not MSN) to 5.0 and now I do not see my online contacts in Outlook Express. Do you know why ???
Thanks in advance.
