Matrox Graphics Inc. has announced that its first Parhelia-512 graphics card will pack 128MB of DDR memory and an estimated street price of $399 when it reaches retailers at the end of this month. The company promises 64MB and 256MB versions for later this summer.

At that price, it'd better destroy the GF4 4600. Otherwise, why go with an unknown for the same price?

Agreed. The 128 MB version at a pricetag of $400?
Thanks, but no thanks.
And what about the 258 MB card? Can we expect upwards of $550-600 for that one?
Once again, thanks, but no thanks.

Its not gonna compete at that price

Matrox is only an unknown in the sense that the performance of this card compared to the GeForce4 line must be seen, they've made good cards before.

Well from what I have read both online and offline in various magazines....the performance to the Geforce 4 line will be poor.
Matrox is staking much in the hopes that high end gamers will buy a video card that doesn't give obscene frame rates...but rather beautiful images, and the ability on the buyers part to spend $$$ to view and play games in 150 degrees with 3 monitors.
So, I don't think this card will beat the Geforce line in frame rates. Instead it will allow you to play with 3 monitors....a niche market. But then that is what Matrox excels at...niche markets.

I'd rather have a stable framerate of 60-80 than one that fluctuates between 100-200.
3 monitors would be neat if supported properly.

Yup difference is, most of the buyers are idiots that see only numbers. They just plain don't understand that you never need anything over 60. If the card does 400 FPS in quake 3, and a few other older games, they'll line up like lemmings to buy it.
If the card does 60fps solid in every game under the sun, they'll completely ignore it.

Three monitors and high angle viewing would be pimp.

Very true. Much like MHz ratings on processors.
People seem to want to think that benchmarks are everything. Must give them a high to brag that their super rig can do 10 fps more then their friends at $400 higher cost.
People.
