Once Again, Blizzard Gets Tough on Hackers

Diablo II Hackers - 6/21/2002
There has been an ongoing problem with a few players using hacks while playing Diablo II closed Battle.net games. In order to provide quality gameplay for everyone, players found using hacks will now find that their ability to join open games has been restricted.

This new measure will prevent players with a history of using hacks from joining open, non-passworded games on Battle.net. The only games these players will now be able to join will be games with other players identified using hack programs. This modification will affect all accounts associated with the CD-Key that has been identified utilizing hack programs.

If you have any questions or observe hacking activity, please let us know by writing to us at hacks@blizzard.com.

So the hackers can only play with the hackers... until they scam another CD-Key and start hacking again... We'll see how well THIS measure works.

as i posted on tg...

"its brilliant.

for almost EVERY gamer, the last thing they want to see is anyone ELSE cheat. shit, even the OGC creator said that if theres hackers in a game he's playing, he'll leave.

yes, if every game company used this idea, the amount of cheaters would divide. not by a small fraction, but a huge one. why? well like said above, no one likes to be in a game where OTHERS are cheating. soon people will realize that the only way to play with non cheaters, is for them to not cheat in the first place.

when you think about it, its like a prison system. the people caught are restricted to only associate with those that are in the prison. and surely, they aren't around the best of the best there...

i like this idea."

you also have to realise that the majority of the cheaters don't even have half a wit as to getting a new cd key - or where to start for that manner.

One would hope.

Why allow them to play the game with other hackers? Why not just ban them permanently?

Posted by: Gunslinger

It's not quite genius, but it's certainly more effective than doing the "close one hole, two more jump in to replace it" thing. This sends a much stronger message - the effect of which can actually be measured..

It's Called Poetic Justice...

Yes, let the hackers' games be ruined by other hackers

Posted by: elhior_manwe

hmm ......the bastards will always find a way to circumvent anything blizzards does to reduce the scum.........

Posted by: Gunslinger

Well, short of hacking the server software (ahahahahaha), they aren't going to circumvent this.

They can get new cd keys, but that won't last them long.

Because most people are cheaters. And if you piss off most people, your next game won't sell shit.

Hmmmm....so what is to stop an error that would cause someone who does not cheat...like me....from being labeled a cheater by who/whatever.

What happens exactly if a non cheater is somehow forced to play cheater games? Is there a court of arbitration, or some other system for the sake of fairness?

Posted by: Gunslinger

Ewwwwww. Arbitration. That's just way uncool.

Yes, it is a philosophical question, I guess. Would you rather throw 1 innocent man in prison if it meant you locked up 100 hardened criminals, or would you rather not lock up a single innocent person if it meant that 100 hardened criminals walked free as a result?

It's a tough one, in this case, one that is ultimately answered by Blizzard.

We'll see how many people actually have this problem. I suspect that your thoughts are correct, and there will be some glitch that locks out an innocent person.

Posted by: Null Actor

I'd imagine they base it on server logs. As long as you've never performed a dupe cheat, or something like that, you are safe. If you've never taken too-good-to-be-true items from someone you don't trust, you are probably safe.

However, ignorance is not innocence.

Posted by: Swilo

You won't get flagged for having dupes, they'll just disappear like normal. You will only be flagged for duping if they have an access record with the packets being sent that dupe an item, or if they receive those packets.
Cartain cheats like maphack would be hard to detect, so most people don't need to worry about it. Although if blizzard felt like it they could have the game scan the .map/.ma# files to check the visible areas of a map, but this could be gotten around by simply having the cheat rewrite the file after exiting the game.

What anybody really needs to worry about is the paranoia this will cause. Most people will be too busy worrying about "AM I FLAGGED?!" to even play, and this will spread to others. Also, it will stop a lot of people from even thinking about cheating.

That may be true gunny..but that one innocent person is one less happy customer later.

I can say with great clarity that if I was ever sent to the bad boys section for some server corruption, or screw up, or even by human mistake on the part of Blizzard...it won't be like going to the void...I would cease supporting Blizzard and their products.

That is something they can take to the bank...from a person that has all their games.
