Cd read error (unexplained)

I used to play diablo II all the time until our comp some how screwed up and our only fix (literally) was to format and reinstall everything
Now i can play sc/bw war2bne and other cd roms
But when i install diablo II (m player install) and get everything finished it doesn't even bother to check for a cd in the drive (have a creative 24x and a 4x4x32x rewrite drive) it won't pick it up in either of those 2 drives in any of 1.00 1.01 1.02 and 1.03 patches
Have tried tech support page for d2 and went thru their things but to no advail have installed it with NOTHING else running save windows (which is win 95 c)
I know that the play disc is fine and works still but theirs something that is preventing the diablo II file from even checking the cd drive for the presence of a cd when i click on the icon (from desktop, the cd's (install and play), or the diablo II folder)
Basically i'm lost and so seemenly is diablo II tech support if you can offer any advice that helps it TWOULD be much appreaciated
thanx for your time in advance

It may be a registry glitch or something, or your CD drives may need a firmware upgrade. There are lots of possibilities on this type of problem.
I had this problem in the past, and I think I solved it by using a No-CD hack that I got from some site. We do not support hacks here, but in this case this hack actually made gameplay possible for many people.
I am not on my home computer right now, and I couldn't recollect what registry changes I made to make Diablo II look for the hard drive instead of the CD.
I am tempted to attach the the hackfile itself, but since it also requires changes to the registry, I am holding off until tonight when I get home. We do not support hacks here, but in this case, this file has solved a lot of problems with users who couldn't make their D2 game CD work.
There may be someone else who can give you a better solution. Stick around.

Actually I think that Diablo II is known to be "non-CD-ROM-drive-friendly". The fact probably is that neither of your CD-ROM drives like the Diablo II CD in there.
The only fix I can think of (other than getting a new CD-ROM drive that is "compatible" to D2) is to grab the No-CD Patch from www.gamecopyworld.com. I would warn you though, that since version 1.03, you cannot login to Battle.net using the No-CD Patch.
But I'm dumb, so perhaps someone else may come up with a better solution. ;P

I doubt that the creative 24x cd rom is non diabloII friendly because it ran the game happily before i got hit and i have updated the cd rom and rewrite to the latest driver versions with no luck or advail
Posted by:
Mine looks the same as yours save its installed to c: drive and the cd search was default e: i changed that to d: but with no luck
Was DiabloIICD "E:"
Changed to DiabloIICD "D:"
Their is a difference however
DiabloIICD "D:"
InstallPath "C:\Diablo II"
Program "C:\Diablo II\Diablo II.exe"
Save Path "C:\Diablo II\Save\"
Whereas your things under data are NOT in ""'s (quotations) mine are would this happen to make a difference ???

Thank you for submitting this information. Our programmers are currently
looking into this issue to determine if we can prevent this problem in an
upcoming patch. I am forwarding them the information you sent. It should
be helpful to us in figuring this out. As we find information, we will post
it at http://www.blizzard.com/support/diablo2/. If we find something that
can be improved with a patch, we will make the necessary changes and include
the update in an upcoming patch. Thanks again for your help in this. We
will do everything we can to address any problems that we find as quickly as
possible.
Thanks,

Hmmm .. looks like the usual canned response form Blizzard. Anyway, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and let you try out the patch that worked for me:
Attached is the No-CD patch for Diablo2 1.03. Below are the instructions ot use it:
- Install the game - Full Installation (~ 1.5 GB)
- Download and apply the official Diablo 2 v1.03 Patch
- Replace the original game executable (game.exe) with the one from the zip file (make sure to back up the original game executable just in case)
- Copy the following file from CD#2 (PLAY CD) to the game directory: D2MUSIC.MPQ
Make sure to change the registry entry for DiabloIICD to the path of your D2 game folder. Then see if the game loads.
Post back if you have any further problems.
Note: This patch file is unsupported by Blizzard Entertainment, and is offered only as an option to fix some CD-related problems with D2. Use this file at your own risk.

Note that you will not be able to access Battle.Net in multiplayer if you install the No-CD patch ... forgot to mention that, sorry.

Ok it works however battle net cannot authenticate version on me now

Yes, as I said, it's a natural side-effect of the patch .. you can still play IP/LAN games, but not Battle.net games, unfortunately...
Maybe the upcoming 1.04 patch for D2 will fix it...

And just a quick reminder that if and when the 1.04 patch DOES come out, you use your backed up "game.exe" again before loading the patch itself.

Are you trying to autorun the CD? I had that read problem once. I just opened up MY computer and manually ran the CD from there.
You might do a quick registry check to see if Dablo II is pointing to the right drive letter.
Click Start and select run. Type regedit at the run line. From there, goto this location:
Registry location.
The path to get to is right at the bottom of the pic. As you can see in the right side where it says DiabloIICD , the drive letter Diablo II thinks the CD is in.(E: in my computer) If it is wrong, doubleclick that value in the right side where the drive letter is and change it to the right drive letter.
{WARNING- Only edit the registry if you 're familiar with it. It won't hurt to look at it but don't save anything unless you know your way around.

If you have quotes, leave the quotes in. It's the difference in Operating Systems. Although the registry is basically the same on all of them with minor differences. Here's some more tips to consider:- Open My computer and hit the F5 key. Maybe refreshing will help the OS detect the CD and maybe the game will see it then.
- If you're using a non-Intel chipset like VIA, ALi, AMD, or SiS, you probably need the latest IDE chipset driver update for your chipset. It may help with your CD Drive detecting CD's.
If nothing that's been posted so far helps you, you'll probably just have to wait for the next patch. Blizzard has some glitches that need to be fixed and until they do, some people will continue to have CD problems. I really hate to see that happen to anyone.Especially considering how much this game costs.

Wait!! You are using Windows 98 I assume.
Give this a try.
Download this file. It is a Windows95 version of the CD driver file.
CDFS.VXD
Here is what you need to do.
Go to your C:
go to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS
Rename the CDFS.VXD there to CDFS.W98
Copy the file mentioned above which is from a windows 95 version, and place in that folder. Reboot your computer and give it a try.
What I am thinking happened is you possibly had windows 95 and did an upgrade. It possible left the settings or the win95 file on the pc. When you formated, you possible loaded win98 straight.
Give this a try even if this is not the case. Post back with the results.
Good Luck!!!!

LOL.
That was the earliest post I could find on Diablo II. Who is Revenge? It says that he's a moderator but I don't see him here now.
