Apple Pays Off People To Lie in Mac Ads

WinInfo has news of Apple paying off people to explain why they switched from Windows in their
"Short Takes" newsletter
:

Windows "Switchers" Were Solicited, Paid
It turns out that Apple's latest ad campaign, in which former Windows users explain why they moved to the Mac, is less than honest. Contrary to comments made by CEO Steve Jobs last week, Apple solicited the ex-Windows users featured in the ads--the users didn't approach the company first. Furthermore, the participants were paid to be in the ads and will receive royalties each time their ad airs. I don't think any of this would be noteworthy if Jobs hadn't implied that the users approached Apple instead of the other way around.

Did they really switch or were they payed to say they switched when they really didnt? If they are getting paid to talk about it when they really did switch, then thats fine, but if its the other way around, well then thats just stupid.

I like Mac OS, but it doent have enough game support for me to "Switch".

heh, sounds typical to me. i wouldnt expect them to appear in commercials without the normal compensation agreement that all actors have. and i never buy that "real life" kinda crap anyways.

lmfao lol

couldnt pay me to say i switched to crapple OS heh.

I hate to say it, but Macs aren't all bad. In my service days I actually considered picking up a G4 just to mess around with. OSX is pretty impressive though.

I wouldn't touch an iMac with a ten foot pole, let a lone a 20 foot pole either. I think the number one thing that I used to have to fix on them was either the screen or the power supply. They had a knack of dying a lot.

They do suck on networking, and playing games.

what's the veracity of this claim? where'd wininfo dig up this little nugget? let me guess--from microsuck's PR dept?

omg steve jobs lied to the media, unbelievable.... i am outraged i will never buy another mac or believe anything ever again

Well its not that hard to figure out why wininfo would post that...

Its called counter-advertising.

The only lie I see is the subject of this article--it's a blantant inflamatory lie.

I don't know what exactly Steve Jobs said, but I'd bet it wasn't exactly a lie--and the WinInfo while not entirely false, is not really true either--

The real story: Apple solicited for people who had switched from Windows to Mac to write in and tell their story, and possibly be selected for commercials and such. More like a contest than anything. And the people in the ads chose to write in. So did they approach Apple first or did Apple solicit them? Who cares, it's pointless, completely dependant on your point of view--my point is that Apple's ad campain (which incindentally I don't care for) is to show real people who really did switch, from Windows to Macintosh. So to that end the commercials are not a lie or false advertising--if you don't like them, that's your choice. But to say "Apple paid people to lie in the ads" is complete horse crap.

And of course they were paid for their time on the commercial--I'm sure they paid whatever the Screen Actors Guild going rate is--I think there aren't really any ways around that.

Uh.. if Apple solicited people to write in.. then.. uh... hate to tell you this, but then they were solicited... Unless you're using two different definitions of the word "solicited" in the same paragraph...

Man, I hate those "i dunno what exactly they said but it was probably wrong because i say so! And the other side is probably wrong too because, well, it just probably is because my side is probably right even though i can't exactly prove it!" arguments.

They lie in advertisments? Oh my god, the horror! This is absolutely unheard of!

Posted by: Chako

LOL! Yeah...and I MUST believe that all INTEL/AMD/Microsoft adverts are above board.

And Brittney Spears drinks a lot of soda, and Rosie O'Donnel shops at K-Mart, and all those stick-skinny models in the TGIFridays commercials are actually eating all that food...

Damnit I knew I got screwed somewhere. All I got was a set of new tires.
