Users on file trading networks may soon have to worry about "attacks" from copyright holders:
A California congressman is preparing a bill that would let copyright owners, such as record labels or movie studios, launch high-tech attacks against file-swapping networks where their wares are traded.
Rep. Howard Berman, D-Calif., whose district includes Hollywood territory, said Tuesday that copyright owners needed new legal protections to combat online piracy. Some of the labels' and studios' high-tech techniques for stopping online file traders might be illegal under anti-hacking laws, Berman said.

all jesting aside, this would set a disturbing precedent from a legal/philosphical perspective. basically, the idea behind this legislative push is that simply the status of ownership entitles someone to *actively* do harm to others--anticipatory, preemptive strikes. we don't let folks set boobytraps outside of their houses in anticipation of burglaries (think of the wayward kids for god's sake!)--but could it lead to that? shooting people for looking at you funny? a precrime police division booking you for murders yet to happen?

Yeah. If some cop told me I was under arrest for a crime I'll commit next week, I'd stick my foot up his ass with my boots on and rotate.
