Shalome, you would like this.

In the Song:
You'll be sorry that you messed with the U.S. of A. 'cause we'll put a boot in your ass — it's the American way."

Now why on earth would ABC want to pull a song that makes the US look like a schoolyard bully? Makes you wonder...
Posted by: Shalome
Uh.. yeah..
Send boots to Peter Jennings? Because some country singer wrote a song about how the USA will kick your ass and ABC News didn't want to play it?
Peter Jennings didn't nix the song, ABC News did. And whatever -- 1) I hate country music, 2) I've never heard of Toby Keith, 3) I really don't think it's appropriate for a news network to air a song that glorifies the USA "kicking your ass."
The article refers to the song as "banned." It's hardly banned; in fact, it's apparently doing rather well on the charts.

I thought you would find it interesting considering you hate country music it would be funny to see country music fans overreacting and it could give you a laugh. Guess not.

Disgusting.

Song isn't that bad.. almost fitting with the events of 9/11 and the upcoming 4th of July..
ABC want's to be the "clean and tidy" network.. so they won't put that on.. no big deal.. I have the internet.. I can watch the video.. and download the mp3..

hm so are we saying its not the american way to 'kick someones ass' when they mess with us? i would sure as hell hope it is. but about not playing it on abc's july 4th special well i guess that's up to the producers (though i think it is a pretty good song for the occasion) don't watch much tv so i cant be certain, but abc has prolly aired worse things than that before.

ive heard the song, and dont think its appropriate for the 4th. basically, the song says "were gonna get you". not exactly uplifting and patriotic. if they want to play a popular song, hero would be a better choice, it could be construed as patriotic, although it isnt.
now, not to say mr keith didnt write a good song, im not going to critique it. but its not a celebratory song, nor is it uplifting, its a go out and get em song. maybe make a theme for a fighting regiment

It's a song written in a time of anger, hatred, and sadness, specifically to threaten those responsible for Sept. 11. Just because it mentions the USA doesn't mean it's patriotic, or that it should be played in celebration of the USA's independence day. I agree with wench on this one.

I completly agree with wench and Shalome. The 4th is a time for fireworks and miniture American flags, not a time for saying you're going to lodge footwear in someones anus.
Personally, I think ABC should open with Jimi Hendrix's version of The Star Spangled Banner! Or atleast American Woman. (I don't think that's Hendrix though) Now there's a patriotic song!

American Woman was sung by Lenny Kravitz.

lol chako. your age is showing dear.
the guess who performed that song.
Posted by: Chako
I know, but I much prefer Lenny's rendition of it.
Umm..and only a few years between us darling

I heard that ABC considered playing Lee Greenwood's "I'm Proud to be an American" but the cost in barf bags required for public airing of a trumped-up piece of garbage like that was prohibitive.

How is it garbage? It makes proud Americans feel good about themselves and remembers then men who died for our country. A man singing about the love for his country is garbage now everybody. Lets all move to Afghanistan.

I have no problem with a modicum of patriotism. I love my country. . .I fear my government but I do love this country. However, sappy country-pop is garbage. Neither country nor pop has changed fundamentally or provided any innovative elements for any other genre for a very long time. Blending the two and expecting something new is like stirring together Vegemite and squirrel poop and expecting it to make a great sandwich spread.
BTW, when one post follows another which it addresses, a quote isn't really necessary. FYI.

Mindless patriotism is bigger garbage.

If you need to have a song to make you feel good to be an American..then something is wrong.
Hey Nova..are there any Patriotic Canadian songs? I can't think of any..and I am still proud to be a Cannuk.

The national anthem is all we need.
We don't need songs and media fed to us to bolster our patriotism up here. Everyone knows why or why not they are patriotic, and they don't need the media shoveling shit at them to fuel it.
IMO.

Well no one attacks insignificant countries so there's no reason to bolster it there.

I don't like the boot in the but song for a holiday opener. American woman - "get away from me" would not be my choice either.
Hendrix - Star Spangled Banner - would be good as long as they don't show a clip of him peeing on a guitar.

My take?
Some patriotic songs are elitist, imperious, individualistic, discriminatory, selfish, overzealous, close-minded, and sometimes even separatist in nature...
Too much patriotism is not healthy, it promotes closemindedness and blind devotion... and I'm not just talking about the US...
