An alleged piece of hardware...
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: uh...ok
...today while I was at Burger King I somehow got into a conversation with a person, a self-proclaimed hacker, who told me about this piece of hardware that you add on to your modem, or supplement your modem with, that supposedly doubles the connect speed. He said that it's one of those stuff that can probably only be attainable through "underground" means (or he seemed to imply it), saying that Army bases have 'em. He got his from Alamo, CA.
I'm not exactly sure what exactly it's called, but I vaguely remember the words "cell splitter" or something of the like... have no clue if that recollection is close to correct.
I believe that the guy has no need to lie to anyone about such a trivial matter, especially to a complete stranger. My question is, rather, if anyone has heard of such equipment, and if so, where it can be found.
-uh...ok
P.S. Sorry for putting this under General Discussions, Laggy, but I figured this wasn't EXACTLY a hardware kinda thing, but wanted to open it up for discussion among a larger group of people (I'm sure most people who visit other forums also stop by here).

hmm
something tells me if the army needed more bandwidth it would probably get it without needing some sort of modem doo-hickey to supplement its 56slows

Hmmmm ... that guy was talking bullshit, hehehe ... well, somewhat ...
Connect speeds are not only dependent on your hardware, but on your ISP too ... an ISP that filters the connection to what you're only supposed to get affects your overall connection ... I mean, 56K modems can't even download at 56K flat, coz of FCC regulations (dunno if that is still in effect)...
Anyway, there IS a piece of hardware that reportedly increases your dial-up connection speed. It was a Diamond product (forgot the name) and it had to be plugged into TWO phone lines to get almost double the speed ... that was the only analog dial-up modem add-on that was commercially available.
And his reference to the army doesn't really make much sense. As Bob said, the army would not still be using 56K modems, especially those that are available to consumers. Any "addon" that allegedly doubles dial-up speed would have to be connected to a specially-made modem - something that cannot possibly be available on the consumer level. And come on, 56K connection for the army? Hehehe ...
The guy may have no need to lie, but lie he did, I think. Probably trying to impress you with his access to "underground" technology. And you know by now that any "self-proclaimed" hacker is no hacker at all - we get lotsa self-proclaimed hackers on bnet and 95% of them dunno shit about hex-editing.
I have a solution to make your connection much much faster than the usual, and it doesn't require any additional underground hardware ... it's called Broadband, hehehe http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/smile.gif
You can shrug it off, UO ... the guy was talking out of his arse http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/biggrin.gif
p.s. I don't mind this topic being in here. Since it isn't real hardware, it doesn't belong in the hardware discussion forum, hehehe http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/smile.gif

ah
so then non real hardware can go into this forum
in that case - can anyone recommend a good PCI time machine? ive only got a 400mhz so i probably cant go that far into the past or make it more than a week into the future (traveling to the future has higher requirements than the past - duh!)
ive been looking at prices and mr. peabody's wayback machine seems to fit my price range for what im looking to do
cant seem to find any reviews for it though
any recommendations?

dont touch it if it aint broke...
no really, dont

hmm, dunno if I have a complete system for you, Bob, although I DO have a refurbished flux capacitor on auction at eBay ... may need to add a couple more RIMMs and a full cylinder of plutonium, but it's serviceable ...
Want the link? http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/biggrin.gif

VeryGrumpy tried what is called a Duel Modem. This is actually two modems connected to two phone lines. Your ISP has to have the capabilities of supporting it as well. We had to buy the modem, but our ISP gave us the special account for free, we were the guinipigs. It did help for some applications like Gamespy, but most web pages did not support the extra bandwidth and the duel modem seemed to slow things down instead of speed it up. We ditched the duel modem after about a month of using it.

ohh
oh no thanks laggy
im not interested in plutonium based time travel -- its just too much hassle to safely maintain and store the plutonium :/
you must know what im talking about having it on ebay and all
thanks for the offer though http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/wink.gif
